I haven't been around much, but I have been watching the games. It appears to me Brent spent a lot of NIL $ on defense and sort of forgot the offense.
Thats what it looks like to me anyways. From North Texas to the SEC is a big jump my friends!!
So what if 3-4 years ago and we still have Riley, and Riley goes and hires Brent to do defense?????
Just a thought and yes I hate Riley!!!

That is the problem in my opinion, we keep bringing people back.
Look outside the Bob Stoops inner circle and find the best guys that have no previous tenure here.
I wasn't a fan of BV getting the job but was hopeful he would get it done but now I no longer think he can.

I also don't believe BV would have come back if Riley had tried a few yrs ago. He was coaching defense in playoff games and winning nattys, plus the way he was done by Bob I think he would have said thanks but no thanks. He was waiting for the right HC position and it paid off for him, us not so much.

Maybe he gets it turned around and I hope he does because starting over again after 3 yrs would likely set us back even farther but keeping him and this staff around may likely do the same thing.
No other words come to mind, it just sucks.

Not really any place to go for a few yrs. Who signed off on that extension?
OU hasn't lost 3 games in a row by double digits since 1998.

Brent Venables Buyout:

  • 2024: $44.8 million
  • 2025: $37.2 million
  • 2026: $29.4 million
  • 2027: $21.7 million
  • 2028: $13.6 million
People complain about the NIL and players getting paid but Coaches and Bad Hires bleed the Program dry and can set a Program back for yrs if not decades.
I find it interesting that people defend these coaches in CF but look at Jimbo Fisher and his buyout Aggot had to pay him. He said recently in an event in Arkansas that when asked about all the money he got he said its never been about the money and that he would Coach for whatever it is that HS Coaches make, 50 grand a yr or something like that. Thats bs. They do it for the money. He is gone and his replacement has Aggot right now as the only undefeated team in the SEC after they ran all over LSU last night.
My point is don't think that just because BV's buyout is so big that we cannot cut ties and do better. I think we should at least after next season if this shit show continues.

Look what Elko has done with that talent at AtM in year 2. It goes to show you what a good coaching hire can do for a program. Jimbo never accomplished anything with that talent.

hopefully Finley watched a little bit of the A@M/LSU game and took notes on how to beat LSU. Put a package in for Hawkins and run the zone read plays. LSU had zero answers for that style of offense in the 2nd half of that game.

BV is going down in the annals of time with John Blake. Would anyone have spoke about bringing John Blake back in any capacity?

People will be arguing over which coach was worse at some point.

Right now its a close race but at least BV can use the offensive injuries excuse. The hiring of SL though is all on him as he should have went outside the program to get an A+ hire.

I saw that last night. LSU had no answers for him.
Aggie sitting atop the Conference standings at 5-0, the only team left unbeaten in Conference play. They have 3 Conference Games remaining SC, Auburn and Texass. They play New Mexico State in between SC and Auburn.

Y'all do realized that John Blake was 12-22 during his 3 years and BV is currently 20-14.

Yep, he's currently 20-14 (0.588). He's got a bit of work to do to get up to Gary Gibbs' level, 44-23 (0.657). Gibbs actually won two bowl games and only had one season with less than 7 wins before he got fired.

Correct, but the discussion was concerning John Blake and BV, I don't recall Gary Gibbs being discussed in the 2 posts.

I was putting his winning percentage into perspective He's well ahead of John Blake, but he will need to step it up to catch Gary Gibbs.

Gary’s biggest problem was his record against Texas, Nebraska and Colorado. He was way better than John Blake.
Gibbs also had to deal with the fallout from Switzer's tainted legacy in the wake of the 1989 three year probation.
I will always believe better things for Gibbs if there had been a quiet, seamless transition following Switzer.

To be fair Blake also didn't have the talent level that BV has. He had some but not the stock that BV has.
Your statement isn't fair at all. Boo Blake was a horrible coach. Players liked him some. But when he got fired, rightly so, he destroyed all of his recruiting info for Stoops' staff. THAT was despicable. The opposite of a team player. He was the worst HC at OU in 100 years. Blake had a good bit of talent. He also had a good bit of offenses, which he changed about three times a season. He was without defense. And his team was horribly out of shape. Stoops fixed those things, which included getting 11 guys on the field for special teams. Blake made Tulsa OUr peer.

Actually it is a fair statement. Do you really think Blake had the talent that BV has? The program was still reeling from Switzers exit and Gibbs had to deal with that and done his best to try to keep the program being relevant.

He couldn’t beat Texas or Nebraska and it cost him his job and then OU hired Blake as Switzer recommended him if my memory serves me right.

Yes there was some talent on the roster but JB had no clue what to do with it. Stoops came in and knew what to do with the talent he had. I didn’t say Boo had no talent but I did say he didn’t have the stock of talent that BV currently has on campus.

That is something you can’t argue. I do agree though Boo was a horrible hire.

Stoops took those same guys two years later and won our last natty. Boo was just a horrible coach.

Blake took credit for accumulating that talent. Can't have it both ways.

From that article. Again your right Blake sucked but Stoops worked a miracle with what he inherited.

The 2000 Oklahoma Sooners struggled to field either a blue-chip loaded team or an exceptionally athletic one. Here was the lineup they utilized in their National Championship victory over the Florida State Seminoles.
