We gave away a National Championship...

OU has to get better on defense. Either Stoops and Kish both have to go, or at least just get rid of Kish. Get somebody in there that can actually coach the inside linebackers and develop them. It's been an awful long time since we've had a dominant inside linebacker.

OP, I said the same exact thing last night. NC was ours to lose, and Mike Stoops lost it. OU with at least an average D would have destroyed all three of the other CFP teams. Unfortunately, you have to play with the team you have.

Agreed about lacking a "dominant" MLB. And by dominant, I trust you are referring to a Tommy Nobis, Brian Bosworth, Ray Lewis, Jonathan Vilma type of MLB that just completely controls the line of scrimmage and forces offenses to game plan around the MLB. But then, guys like that don't come along every day.

True, we've had some good ones in the Bob Stoops era, Rocky Calums, Teddy Lehman, Lance Mitchell, Curtis Lofton and Rufus Alexander, all who earned All Big 12 Conference honors and all went on to the NFL. But none were what many would consider as dominant when they played at OU.

We've only had a couple of All-Conference inside LBs at OU under Stoops/Kish - Jordan Evans and Dominique Alexander (both are in the NFL) - but neither fits the description as "dominant" when they played. Our current MLB, Kenneth Murray Jr. seems to have the size and speed to be another good MLB, but the jury is still out on whether he is going to be regarded as another very good MLB or dominant. Good news for him is that he's only a sophomore and has time to grow and develop, provided he has the right coach and scheme.

What's concerning to me is that we've had a number of defensive players from the last decade that I thought were OK at OU but not great who have gone on to have very good pro careers. Just being a multi-year starter in the NFL means to me that you should have been a pretty dominant college player. Why the discrepancy? Obviously the athletic abilities are in these guys.

That only goes so far. You also have to have a competent defensive staff that can use the talent to its maximum on game day. Mike Stoops isn't that guy and it starts with him.

Why in the hell were we ever dropping our most talented pass rusher into pass coverage on obvious passing downs? That's just completely Stoopid.

I am a Mike Stoops Basher, of record, but I don't honestly feel that the Rose Bowl Fiasco can be pinned entirely on him. I believe that it was a BAD Combination of Ingredients that led to the loss. IMO, he and Riley have to share the blame for it, and possibly, in disproportionate amounts...with Riley owning the Lion's Share of the Responsibility, and bearing the Brunt of the Burden....

One may criticize Riley for specific play calls or periods of offensive ineptness but when you score 45 points in regulation, 38 of which were generated by the offense on the reigning SEC champion, it's hard to find overall fault with the effort.
Agree, Field...And, in critiquing the RB, we mustn't leave out the players. Some of them didn't play their usual good game, or rise to the occasion...That's why I mentioned 'Combo of Ingredients'...The makings of 'A Perfect Storm. The operative word in your comments is OVERALL...My finger pointing is more for SPECIFIC Fumbles, from Riley...No doubt, Lessons Were Learned, by ALL...

My main gripe with Riley is taking his foot off the gas when we get a good lead, knowing what our Defense is he should be trying to score every possession. If changes are not going to happen on the defensive staff then at least develop a killer instinct on offense because no lead is safe with our inept defense.
Big game failures seem to be a plaque to OU going back years with Bob, Bob is no longer here so what is the cause? Besides Mike, who are the others that are dead weight on this staff?

Maybe it's just me but I see some talent on D, including Murray Jr. I also think loyalty to Beal, and possibly Kelly, could have been a fault. But then again I still always come back to the scheme. 1 DT, 2 DEs and 1 LB does not make a 4 man front.

We wasted Lampkin. We're wasting Gallimore. Ward was underutilized. Bledsoe is being asked to do much. Mann coming in as a DT on 3rd and long situations instead of playing a true DE spot. Lott sitting on the sidelines. We're trying to run a "hybrid" everything and it's left us with nothing. We have a broken DC. Tavon Austin put Mike Stoops on life support in November 2012 and Baylor pulled the plug in 2014...

...we've been flat lined ever since.

I don't buy the theory that OU "gave away" a championship.
Georgia, Clemson and Alabama are simply better teams overall, and by that I include coaching staffs and the ability to play defense.....as well as having decent offenses.
Even when OU went up 31-14, I knew the game was going to be decided late. Georgia made some adjustments, OU went into a conservative mode, a squib kick resulted in a Georgia FG to end the first half and OU's defense went belly-up in the second half.
When a team is as one dimensional as OU (all offense-no defense) it will always find itself on the outside looking in as far as championships go.

I was surprised that Saban didn't come out throwing the ball from the get go. The game would have never went into OT if he did.

Pretty simple really. We cannot give away what we don't have.
OU usually has one of the best offenses in the Nation and sometimes the best. What we don't have is a good Defense and have not for quite a while.
Well balanced teams win Titles while the ones that don't win them resort to what if's and doing the same things over and over expecting different results as we do with our defense.
Until the problems with the Defense are addressed and changes are made to ensure success we will be where we are now, pulling for teams to win a NC that beat us rather than playing for one ourselves.
I too am no longer going to bash MS, it now falls on the laps of his enablers. If they don't see the problem they never will and OU will carry on as usual and all of us so called spoiled fans just have to remember the good old days and be proud we were once feared and not laughed at.
It seems now at OU we hope our defensive players can overcome their coaching and thats not OU Football.

This was my bitch during the season. Put the game further out of reach with every opportunity. Save running out the clock for the last 5 or 6 minutes of the game.

Yep, as long as the other team has air in their lungs keep pouring it on.
I didn't watch the game last night but have read some dog fans comments online that Kirby and staff kind of did that last night, went into a shell with a 2 possession lead. Young bucks or inexperienced head coaches making costly mistakes in big games.

I watched the game and I didn't see it that way. The two games were different. Georgia came out in the 2nd half w/ a different defense against OU while Bama came out w/ a different offense against Georgia. Two completely different scenarios. BTW Kirby wasn't calling the offensive plays last night.

We had the most proficient offense college football has ever seen, and I've seen some god dang good ones in my 50 years! If we'd just had half a defense, still smh............I was hoping that Defense I witnessed smother Buckeye would show up somewhere down the line............god dang almighty, I am and will be pissed for sometime. Changes will hopefully be made to address the obvious problems. I do know my SOONER BRETHREN, we will be in the mix as we always are!

BOOMER!

I keep hearing we shut down Ohio st offense we was just lucky jt barret couldn’t throw the ball he missed people wide open and one was in the end zone and threw a terrible pick the defense played good but if he could throw the ball like Fromm that would’ve been a different ball game

I agree in a way too. But the offense had scored enough to win against a run based SEC team. I think we are just so use to OU being able to outscore opponents, that we are now a bit numb to the idea that OUs offense has to make up for the defense.

There's taking your foot off the gas and then there's making sure your GPS is working properly. In the 11/11/18 game s TCU we definitely went into clock eating mode. We have done it in other games as well. But Georgia went to man/press coverage with a single safety and an extra man in the box in the 2nd half, ditching the Tampa-2 zone scheme we were scorching. It took us all 3rd quarter possessions to adjust. Also, as bad as our D was if you take out any one of the 3 long TD runs we win. The D, in terms of all plays was tolerable but the breakdowns were horrible and damning.

1. Squib quick.
2. 3 and out to start.
3. 1 play TD.
4. 3 and out.

The worst possible end and start to the halves put Dawgs right back in the game.

I don't like saying we gave it away, but i sure think we could have been hoisting up #8 if things were a little more balanced, offense and defense. Just a big "what could have been".

Anytime you score 48 points you have to believe you win. If you ever start thinking there’s a chance you won’t, then you absolutely have to admit that your defense isn’t as good as it should be. Now folks, that’s exactly where we are as Sooner fans. We aren’t confident that 48 is enough and that’s just not right. Now what is OU going to do about that?
