There was a writer for ESPN who described last round's game between the Wildcats and the UMBC Retrievers in extremely unflattering terms, calling it the worst least-watchable game of the round. I saw the game and came up with a much different opinion.
I saw a defensive masterpiece between two teams that struggled mightily to defeat the other team's defense. It mesmerized me by the brilliant team-oriented defense by each team. They couldn't buy a bucket, but one short stretch late where KU shot well was the difference.
And though UMBC lost, I was very impressed by their unselfish defense in both games. Tonight KU was pretty much just a little bit better than Kentucky for most of the game, and much smarter down the stretch. I actually favored KU to win, because Kentucky's attitude in winning their last game was just too smug. There was a reason why they were "only" a 5-seed and not their usual better seed.
KU is highly unlikely to win the championship, but the way their defense is playing, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the 11-seed Loyola Ramblers from the MVC on Saturday.
4 teams out of the remaining 12 are from the Big 12, with KSU, WV, KU and Texas Tech. Same for the ACC with FSU, Clemson, Duke and Syracuse (the last at-large picked). Either conference could put 3 teams in the Final Four.
The Big Ten has Purdue and Michigan left, while the Big East has Villanova and the MVC has Loyola.
