who are fortunate to attend this historic and hugely consequential re-match vs. Texas.
I grew up in Ft Smith, AR (home of Tre Norwood) and, though my dad was a graduate of OU undergrad and law school (and also served as student body president while an undergrad), we rarely attended OU football games. Although we were both HUGE fans (I was named after Greg Pruitt and Tommy McDonald and went to OU football camp several times), my dad worked his ass off 6 days a week as a trial lawyer and loved to sit back and watch his team on TV.
This changed when my older brother attended SMU which led to us attending some memorable RRR games. I can remember going to the fair on numerous occasions to just see if we could get tickets without paying a huge amount of $$$ (can remember $80 being a huge amount of $$$).
One of the most memorable experiences we had was the year we weren’t successful in getting tickets and had to drive back to my brother’s apartment to try and catch the end of the game. We got there and didn’t have the key so we had to listen to the game on the radio. After Lasher missed a FG to win the game my dad (who I never saw drunk) got wasted and made us drive home that night.
Later when I would go to the game with my dad while I was at SMU, I can remember tearing up while watching our bandleader take the field and thinking I had made a huge mistake not going to school at OU.
Regardless of where I have lived since college (LA, Tulsa, Phoenix and now the Hampton Roads area of Virginia), OU vs Texas has remained a huge event for me. This didn’t change when my dad died of cancer in 2010.
I can’t imagine what he would think about this game today. Nothing like this happened in his lifetime so we never got the chance of experiencing it together.
What I do know is that he would be excited as hell and would sit in his favorite chair and watch come hell or high water. We would call each other a few times and both have negative things to say about the way our team is playing regardless of the score (like Father like Son).
I’m sure everyone has had similar experiences like my dad and I with respect to this game so I wish all Sooner fans luck and hope that everyone has a great experience today. If you have the opportunity to be there I hope you appreciate the historical significance of today’s game (not to mention the huge significance in terms of both the conference title and potential play in to the CFB) and I hope you will yell and clap harder than you ever have to let our team know how important they are to our lives.
