Went to the game today, Section 112, Row 6, seat 5 & 6. I say this so you can visualize clearly how close we were behind OUr bench today.
If you were there, you know there were points where Texas looked to be getting the upper hand, and it was tense and quiet in OUr stands. However there were a group of us that didn't stop cheering and encouraging our bench - especially the Defense.
It's the first game (going back to my experience starting in 1974) , where I did not hear one cuss word or negative comment towards OUr team from any OU fan at all - and I'm sure you all know what I mean.
When CD makes the touchdown catch he runs to the sideline and comes over in front of OUr section and 'bows-up' with a double arm flex to the crowd to celebrate - everyone goes absolutely apoplectic! It's insane! Next comes the Safety, with the Defense waiving at OUr section, jumping up and down and celebrating with us.
But here's what knocked me to my knees today, and I'll apologize now for my inability to really put you there so you can experience what we did.
Before I go on I just want to ask you a question. Do you remember the feeling of being a small child and the wonder of exploring the world? I mean before you became an adult and sensed the disappointment of the crassness, isolation and hustle of everyday life?
I ask because when Kyler had let the clock run down I watched something unfold that reminded me of being that little kid and the power of belief.
You see the ENTIRE team: players, coaches, support personnel, I mean everyone was 30 yards on the far end of the bench focused on Kyler and celebrating the fact that OU had just clinched it's fourth consecutive conference title.
Except one...
Tyrese Robinson is walking slowly, alone. Drifting away from the rest of the team, towards OUr section. His head was looking down, nonchalant, not looking at OUr section at all.
Once he comes to Section 112, he stops and looks up at the OU crowd (mind you all of his teammates are at the complete other end of the field), and he raises his arms in victory to celebrate with the fans!
The entire section goes wild! Screaming and cheering! Then with his right hand he holds up four fingers and waves them at us, saying to us - "WE have achieved together that which has never been achieved before!"
I say that because I've been to magical OU games, exciting OU games, thrilling OU games. But this was unprecedented.
Everything in his demeanor said one thing - FAMILY. yOU (the fans) are as much of OUr team as the players on the field today, and I want to make an intentional salute to celebrate with yOU, and thank yOU for yOUr support!
It made me realize how much the players hear us and what is said abOUt them during the games, after the games, in the media, on OUr Facebook/Boards/Twitter accounts. All the brow-beating about how OUr Defense is terrible, how we don't deserve to be in the play-offs, etc. yOU know the drill.
He was also saying, "we need yOU Sooner Nation". We need you to believe in us, support us and embrace us. yOU believe in us when no one else does and your support fuels OUr passion and commitment. "It's us against the world"!
So I wanted to salute Mr. Robinson, and every member of this board and the Sooner Nation. yOU made us prOUD today, yOU "Played Like A Champion Today" and you represented what's best about being a Sooner...
FAMILY!
