Have to be more of a leader now?
I’ve always been that leader from the jump, so nothing has really changed with my leadership. I was there from the jump, so there’s nothing to really change as the season goes on.
What's lacking in this defense now?
Right now? I don’t think we’re lacking anything right now. We just need to focus on the things we’re struggling with right now. Obviously, we need to tackle better. Obviously, we need to get off the field on third downs and third-and-long. As far as the defense, we’re not far off. We have little tweaks that we need to make to complete ourselves as a defense. We’re not far off. We just have to continue working.
Fixing tackling?
Not being fundamentally sound when we’re at the point of attack. When you hit somebody, a lot of times, we see kill shots. We see opportunities to kill somebody that we have to realize we don’t have to kill everybody all the time. Kill shots will come, just wrap and make the form tackle. At the end of the day, that’s the end goal. That’s the goal that needs to happen – make the basic tackle and get the guy on the ground.
What Mike Stoops meant to him?
“And as far as Coach Mike, he means a lot to me. He gave me a shot when nobody else gave me a shot. A lot of people try to say, ‘Well, that’s recruiting. You had a ton of offers.’ Yes I had a ton of offers and stuff like that. But you don’t start as a true freshman every day. Every freshmen in the country doesn’t come in and just start. He believed in me a lot from the jump. For that I’m forever grateful and forever thankful for him.”
Players feel responsible?
"We, as players, we definitely put a responsibility trying to get better as a defense and playing the way we play. As a defense, as players, we know what we can control and so definitely that's something we focus on. Just focusing on what we can control. At the end of the day, what happened to Mike, that wasn't the decision on us. We're players. We don't make the decisions around here. Coach Riley made the decision, decided what he decided, and I trust in that 100 percent. That's what I'm going with. Coach Ruff is my DC. I'm all in with him."
