UPDATE: Cooks and the DBs

Spent the majority of the time with Kerry Cooks (and talking to people about a future Chip Viney story).

Kerry Cooks

- Starting to feel a lot about both safety spots. Mentioned how well Bookie, JParker and Haughton are faring at strong safety.

- Said Barnes and Broiles keep one-upping each other at free safety. One day it's Barnes, next it's Broiles. Sometimes within the same day they're switching who is looking better. One drill Broiles, next drill Barnes.

- Excited about the steps Tre Norwood is taking, already embracing being one of the leaders of the secondary as just a sophomore.

- Said JParker move could work because JP was the best tackler in the secondary in 2016. At safety, need guys who can tackle.

- Loves the depth that is building despite the loss of Starrland Baldwin (re-tore ACL).

- Bookie continues to do well. Same words - natural, mature, same deal.

- Glowing words for Viney that I'm saving for future story.

We had a lot of DBs and some LBs (Murray and Kelly). Nothing from the defensive line. No players and no coaches. Will start transcribing more and add later.

UPDATE: Mike Stoops

Mike Stoops

- Happy with how Jordan Parker is progressing and making the transition. Safeties more involved in the run game and understanding formations, etc., compared to CBs just playing 1-on-1 or a variation of that.

- Watching his defense (duh), but has been able to see his nephews, Drake and Isaac, make some plays. He reference the diving grab by Drake that was later tweeted by OU's official account.

- Really pleased with Caleb Kelly's production and attitude since moving inside. Especially considering CK missed all spring, Stoops very enthused about how Kelly has responded. He's putting it all together but you won't know until he's out there.

- Stoops said he loves a talker like Broiles. He said Broiles is starting to understand the concepts better and likes what he brings to the table.

- In talking the JACK, Stoops made it sound like Jalen Redmond was going to be the starter.

"Obviously, with Jalen out, that puts Addison and Mark trying to find their way and trying to find a consistent playmaker for us."

- Nik Bonitto is working at SAM with Ryan Jones. Stoops praised the young LBs and said Jones has the ability, but still an unknown since he's never played a game.

- Curtis Bolton is pushing Caleb Kelly, but Stoops made it sound like Bolton is going to be more of a third down rushing specialist. That's an area of the defense that hasn't been worked yet so TBD on Bolton's role.

Full statement on Baldwin:

"Before we get started, one injury I want to pass along. Starrland Baldwin retore his ACL that he had repaired right before he got here. He did it in a noncontract (drill) a couple of days ago. We hope for the best but we got the official word on that. Starrland will have surgery in the next few days. He’ll miss this season. He’ll do the full redshirt and he probably won’t be available for the four games. We’ll get it repaired and are excited to do the repair here with our great team and rehabbing the whole way through. It will be a good time for him. He can put some weight on. We like what we saw from him early and we’ll be excited to get him back." - Riley
