Alright guys, we've been aware of the Dalton Wood situation since this morning as we've been discussing things with a first-hand source in McAlester, Okla. and were honestly hoping we could cover all the bases we need to before news came out.
Obviously, now you're all clamoring for any word you can get so we'll give you all that I've been able to gather so far. So here is what was set to run in tomorrow's Scoop:
So you thought the Dalton Wood story was over?
Think again.
On Thursday morning Scoop got a random message of 'I've got some big news for you' and the story started running quickly.
For those that don't remember, Wood has stayed in McAlester this summer rather than reporting as expected and seemed to be all but lost to Oklahoma. With Scoop's last word being something along the lines of 'he is working at a garden shop and living with his girlfriend'.
Then on Thursday morning he told a few key people 'I got my life issues straightened out (and I want to go to Oklahoma)'.
In talking to a source Scoop was informed that Wood has reached out to Jay Boulware and Cale Gundy about returning to the program (if return is even the right word). The two Sooner staffers were, apparently, in a meeting and weren't immediately available to catch up with Wood. Which sounds like a brush off and instantly had some around McAlester wondering if Oklahoma had just washed their hands of the situation.
Though he did reach out to other staff members like Rajeeb Hossain and Drew Hill, and apparently was able to speak with them about the situation. The question immediately became 'was he on his way' and could Oklahoma actually take him on their roster?
In fact Wood had been given a deadline of August 15 to give Oklahoma a final verdict on his choice.
With all that is happening with the Du'Vonta Lampkin situation, as we broke down last week, there has been some question just where Oklahoma's numbers are.
However, the question doesn't seem to be whether or not Oklahoma has a scholarship available - it seems Oklahoma does have room - but instead if Wood reported can Oklahoma even have him at practice?
The Sooners currently have 105 guys practicing, which by NCAA rule is the permissible number, so until August 24 (when school starts) Oklahoma can not bring him into practice unless someone else can not.
So as of right now, that situation is clarifying itself as the ball seems to be in the Sooners court as far as what they'd like to do with the talented, but seemingly confused, Wood.
