Interesting. Before the Tulane game last week the reporter said Holgerson said earlier in the week that they had not figured out just yet how to utilize his abilities. Maybe King doesn't think he should stick around until they figure it out.
A week or so ago Bob Stoops was on ESPN talking with I think it was Scott Van Pelt?
I caught the last bit of it but Bob said something about transfers and the NCAA getting involved or will get involved.
Cue up the King to OU rumors (eye roll). This team is Rattler’s and Mordecai’s next year. Those rumors are preposterous...
Deep down in the article, he says it's not just him, but a "lot" of guys are going to redshirt.
In the local press coverage King has been adamant that he has no intention of transferring. Apparently, Holgerson is supportive of the decision. Their top WR has also decided to RS.
I, for one, will be extremely surprised if King is on the UofH campus in January.
If this is allowed, which it will be... look for many others across the country to follow. IMO, red shirts should be only offered on a players freshman year.
Red shirting freshmen (and injured players) is not a bad idea, but I have seen red shirting sophomores, juniors and seniors being utilized to help solve future depth issues.
One example was center Dennis Buchanan who red shirted in 1974 as a senior when Switzer realized there would be a void at center in 1975 if he played Buchanan AND Kyle Davis in 1974. OU won a national championship in 1975 with Buchanan at center.
That goes back a long time ago, but I'm sure OU has done the same thing several times since then.
Senior linebacker Caleb Kelly this year could be a possible red shirt if he wants to return in 2020. Kelly right now is not much of an NFL prospect so maybe he stays....or even plays later this season. In my opinion, Kelly has been an underachiever although his size and raw talent are impressive. Any news on Kelly's situation ?
Riley's utilization of so many players this year is a plus, especially as it pertains to the future.....so I am not sure that if Riley would favor red shirting incoming freshmen, especially given his team's depth chart without them, not to mention two players now in transfer portals (Perkins and Baldwin).

Two things.
1. Let's face it, if UH was 4-0 or even 3-1, he wouldn't be red-shirting. He isn't winning. It's BS for the balance of the team, especially the Senior class.
2. If a Coach is allowed to red shirt players at any particular year, a player should be able to dictate the same.

It's just me, but if my senior QB told me after four games, that he was going to redshirt, I would ask if he knew which school he would be playing for the next year. If I have to start over going in to game 5, I'm going to be grooming and giving next year's starter some valuable experience.
I tend to agree. Saban would for sure. As I posted earlier, redshirts should be reserved for Freshmen based on the need to develop physically and/or mentally.
Perhaps the NFL being able to draft players after three years removed from high school might be one reason for coaches to play some of their incoming freshman right away.
If a coach recruits a player of elite talent, he knows that player won't be around for his senior year....so why not play him immediately ?

You're most likely correct... and it's the right thing to do as well. I think a few rules need to be adjusted though.
