Day late,
But with time you get to see the game from a different lens. One thing I want to preface this deal with is this:
We are in the pre-season and we just played the two games we are supposed to win. I went thru that process 3 times with Co V and vividly remember how we handled those games.
1. You think ut prepped for Bama..you better believe periods and film session was dedicated to K State and ut the past few weeks.
2. You can bet good money rotations and looks they want to see on film were just as vital to these past two games as actual schemes relegated specifically for our opponents.
3. Off season MATTERS..guys who earned a 1a position are going to be given the benefit of the doubt and will have every opportunity to keep their positions. Even more, though, those 1a guys know how to "score high" and do enough to keep playing time. The "jump off the screen" plays that we all see are no more critiqued than the regular plays that everyone doesn't even notice. So when a puppy makes a play or breaks up a pass, but then doesn't touch his man on a quick ending play to identify he knows his job..he gets a minus that a vet doesn't.
That all said..
1. DG gave me a little cause for pause yesterday. At least 2 of his sacks were self inflicted wounds from confusion and lack of trusting his keys. When we run action "quick game" you have a hitch, then throw your read, #2 and then outlet...afterwards you decisively run or get rid of the ball. He picked it up the 2nd half, and he throws a very good deep ball, but I expect him to play better as a 4th year player in an offense he knows. Go light up Nebbish qb1
2. Running back - man. I love what I'm seeing from 24 and I'm not just saying that bcuz pops is the homie. Kid showed he could jump cut and literally make people miss..while running with power and burst. Hes my rb1. Gray deserves carries but I'd like to see how 24 manages the lions share of carries and 0 be a back that changes the pace. 2 is coming. Not his best showing Saturday but coaches saw last weeks film and got him in fairly early. I think we iron out our rb issues and have a solid back field.
3. Wrs - I need to see an All 22 because people keep telling me wrs are schemed open and DG is missing them. The TV view doesn't always show that. 17 is a stud, 10 still has a lil wiggle, but if we don't find a true X Wr who can win 1 on 1 and be a pre snap threat when teams want to mix it up...we're in trouble. In theory 10 is prototype but he's shown to be finesse and not play as big as he is. No knock...just the film. 3 looks the part but clearly has no chemistry with DG yet. I hope the two puppies know the opportunity before them. There's a chance for one of them to take a job and be an immediate impact. We'll see the next two weeks.
4. TEs - lost on lots of people was the fact 22 played and he blocked well and caught the ball with confidence. We'll need him. 9... @Spacemon25 I'm looking at you. He could have had another td if he catches with a diamond vs trying to do so with his pinkies.
5. Oline - I know u guys are upset and I getit. Our least consistent position is LG and it seems we forced the issue for 2 plus quarters running that way. Coach clearly said something during halftime bcuz the 2nd half was much cleaner but I'd like to see some shake up on the interior of the line. Even 73 didn't play great. The pups look the part and may actually be better athletes then the entrenched starters. They need a look. I will say, though, I KNOW for a fact the oline schemes are not as detailed against those type of opponents as they are in league play. Don't be surprised to see improvement the next two weeks...HOPEFULLY we're all saying "why wasnt it that clean in September" (not like last season when blocking never improved). Co B I fully expect you to clean things up and start leaning on people..lots of folk said the oline was a strength ...lets prove that
6. Dline - I love em. They aren't star studded, but them boys playing hard and making plays. Do not expect our guys to just dominate play in and out. We don't have that caliber of dude right now. But 94 is disruptive, 77 is a hand full, Ellison and Kelley are serviceable and 44 is much bigger than last year. Grimes is clearly the lead dawg. Salute to him for taking/making plays. He's beat his man many times and has hit home a bunch. 40 looks like he's 2 biscuits away from a 3 tech. His motor is still high but he looks too big for his build. Just my humble but he may slide down to a 3 next yr if he isn't careful (and he may find a home there).
7. Backers - there's 28 and everyone else. This will be quick. 28 has all conf ability THIS season and could be AA if he continues to ascend. Now I'll skip to the 4th quarter. Go see 7 come in and close air space the way I BEG 2 and 23 to. Guys...they are NOT getting hammered in practice because they know how to grade out fairly high, but neither can make a play like 7 did on a play side read and react where 7 diagnoses a zone concept or maybe just a rpo concept and pulls the trigger (8min mark of q4) in the B gap in space..by himself and cancels the rb in his tracks. 2 or 23 wait...pick a shoulder and angle the rb to their help 5 or 7 yards down the field...and sometimes miss. Drives. Me. Crazy. And how about 23 at high safety 😬 wow...at least he didn't give up any money. Kids a team player but 37 needs more reps.
8. DBs - how many of you noticed that 5 played all three safety positions Saturday. He played all three well too. Kids an all conf guy and potential AA too. Lucky to have a young stud back there. We may only have him one more year if he starts making game changing plays on a stingy defense. 25 scares me but played well. Missed some plays due to limitations but also made some plays coming down hill. Cbs looked solid. 0 gave up some air on an action bang 8 slant/post but otherwise was solid. 9 and 4 were solid as well. Im honestly not used to our dbs NOT getting torched...im starting to believe 😂😂😂 and 37...almost dropped a gimme but still creates havoc in the hole. We're gonna need him to step up
9. Scheme - guys, this is NOT Linc's team or culture. Our team is laying the foundation to keep itself in ANY game and not lose to teams we should beat. Of course we want a dynamic offense but a sound team with an improving offense is much better than a dynamo offense with a defense that folds like an envelope when people test them. Offensively understand that guys are still learning how to do their job with live bullets. It's literally reps that will fix that. Defensively...I wouldn't expect to see more than 80% of Co Vs stuff this season...maybe in Nov. He's gotta get them to learn the foundation and umbrella before he gets cute. It ain't gonna look like Clemson but it will and has improved 7 fold over the entirety of the 2010s ALREADY
10. Co V - he's already making HIS stamp on the program. We've currently plus on:
TFLs
Sacks
3 and outs
Big plays (minimized)
From ANY year the last decade. During my years every Saturday when defense would state their goals and cues in front of the team, those 4 categories ALWAYS came up. Seeing the players implement that is fun to see. Now let's turn up on the turn overs and get some defensive scores...they're coming.
