Teddy Roosevelt statue to be removed from NYC's Museum....

Fast forward to today. Suddenly the purpose of the memorials has shifted. Suddenly the narrative is now that these are examples of racism. I can't speak for no one but myself but I don't think this is about racism. It's about fascism and the removal all history of the US. From Military, Political, and Religous monuments are being destroyed. And they are being removed in the name of racism. I'm not buying it.

I do not understand how living in a country with its democracy established over 200 years ago, and now, for the first time in history, suddenly we have one of our former presidents set up a group called “Organizing for Action” (OFA).
OFA is 30,000+ strong and working to disrupt everything that our current president’s administration is trying to do. This organization goes against our Democracy, and it is an operation that will destroy our way of governing. It goes against our Constitution, our laws, and the processes established over 200 years ago. If it is allowed to proceed then we will be living in chaos very much like third world countries are run. What good is it to have an established government if it is not going to be respected and allowed to follow our laws?
If you had an army some 30,000 strong and a court system stacked over the decades with judges who would allow you to break the laws, how much damage could you do to a country? We are about to find out in America !
Our ex-president said he was going to stay involved through community organizing and speak out on the issues and that appears to be one post-administration promise he intends to keep. He has moved many of his administration’s top dogs over to Organizing for Action.
OFA is behind the strategic and tactical implementation of the resistance to the Trump Administration that we are seeing across America , and politically active courts are providing the leverage for this revolution.
OFA is dedicated to organizing communities for “progressive” change... Its issues are gun control, socialist healthcare, abortion, sexual equality, climate change, and of course, immigration reform.
OFA members were propped up by the ex-president’s message from the shadows: “Organizing is the building block of everything great we have accomplished. Organizers around the country are fighting for change in their communities and OFA is one of the groups on the front lines. Commit to this work in 2017 and beyond.” OFA’s website says it obtained its “digital” assets from the ex-president’s re-election effort and that he inspired the movement. In short, it is the shadow government organization aimed at resisting and tearing down the Constitutional Republic we know as AMERICA.
Paul Sperry, writing for the New York Post, says, “The OFA will fight President Donald Trump at every turn of his presidency and the ex-president will command them from a bunker less than two miles from the White House.” Sperry writes that, “The ex-president is setting up a shadow government to sabotage the Trump administration through a network of non-profits led by OFA, which is growing its war chest (more than $40 million) and has some 250 offices nationwide.
The OFA IRS filings, according to Sperry, indicate that the OFA has 32,525 (and growing) volunteers nationwide. The ex-president and his ‘wife’ will oversee the operation from their home/office in Washington DC.
Think about how this works. For example: Trump issues an immigration executive order; the OFA signals for protests and statements from pro-immigrant groups; the ACLU lawyers file lawsuits in jurisdictions where activist judges obstruct the laws; volunteers are called to protest at airports and Congressional town hall meetings; the leftist media springs to action in support of these activities; the twitter sphere lights up with social media; and violence follows. All of this happens from the ex-president’s signal that he is heartened by the protests.
If Barack Obama did not do enough to destroy this country in the 8 years he was in office, it appears his future plans are to destroy the foundation on which this country has operated on for the last 241 years.
If this does not scare you, then we are in worse trouble than you know.
So, do your part. You have read it, so at least pass this on so others will know what we are up against. We are losing our country and we are so compliant. We are becoming a “PERFECT TARGET” for our enemy!

Charles Krauthammer was a physician, Pulitizer prize winning syndicated columnist, political commentator and a Fox News contributor before his death. He had a brilliant mind.

Thank you, sir. I would also add that the Confederates were not traitors as they did not take up arms against "their country." The secession by the southern states was clearly legitimate (and thus they were not part of the USA during that period), otherwise, there would have been no need for readmission. Is the USA like the mafia? Once you're in, you can never get out?
 
BTW, this thread probably does not qualify as "sports related," although on second thought, Teddy was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Clearly, this is not a sports thread.....but there are scary events happening in the world that are impacting our lives, so why shouldn't we discuss these events. These are scary times and it would be nice if we could share our thoughts with civility, if that's possible anymore.

Abraham Lincoln spoke those words in his second inaugural address. To me and in the larger sense, those statues were erected under the auspices of binding up the nation's wounds.

I believe the decision as to whether or not statues remain in place should be left up to local governments/voters. I understand the point of view that says we shouldn't honor traitors to the union. However, I also believe that, if they are to be taken down, it should be by consensus of those communities affected and legal redress rather than simply placating mob rule.

Many of those who would summarily tear down Confederate statues are also those who have desecrated monuments to George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. IMO the overwhelmingly good works of those noble men absolve them from the small-minded scrutiny of today's anarchists. God help us if we're only allowed to venerate those whose actions pass retroactive moral litmus tests. Doing so destroys that for which so many have sacrificed and died.
WP....read John Daniel Davidson's piece from August 18th 2017 in The Federalist entitled "Why We Should Keep Confederate Monuments Where They Are" and let me know what your thoughts are. Although Davidson believes the Southern cause was wrong, he also believes that while these statues and monuments were not erected to convey the evils of slavery, that doesn't mean we can't take them as such today.

Although Davidson believes the Southern cause was wrong, he also believes that while these statues and monuments were not erected to convey the evils of slavery, that doesn't mean we can't take them as such today.

Good article and nothing with which I disagree. I recommend it but I doubt many of our younger people would bother taking the time or read it or compare/contrast it with what they should already know.

All of us (and particularly those under 30 years old) have developed very short attention spans. If it can't be captured on a Google search, a cell phone screen, a Youtube clip, a meme, or Twitter blast, then it falls under the heading of "too much work/I can't be bothered." We also fall into the traps of only reading/watching things with which we agree which is anathema to the development of critical thinking or even [gasp] adapting our views. Liberal or conservative, we all tend to drink our own bath water.

In short, those who would destroy monuments are condemned to repeat history that they've never bothered to truly study. I guess it's too much effort to critically examine Russia from 1917 to 1992; China in the 1940s and 1950s, Cambodia in the 1970s, and Germany in the 1930s. Those are all similar playbooks that have failed so spectacularly leaving nothing but a trail of destruction and human misery in their wake.

When I attended the US Army War College in 1997-1998, I listened to a lecture by George Will and he said [paraphrased] "there are those who will tell us that the only reason communism has never worked anywhere is that the right people have never been in charge." Put another way, I don't have to have syphillis to know I don't want it.
