we needed that.....Murray does a great job recruiting these kids
He said a big consideration for choosing OU over USC was because he wanted to play SEC football and baseball. He said the SEC has the best of both sports. Strike one up for the move to the SEC. Boomer!
Tatum recognizes the machine Brent's building plus he's close to home. His commitment speaks volumes.
I was reading about Tatum early this morning. I knew his decision was coming soon, but I didn't expect he was going to announce today! With JA managing the ball and players like Tatum running it, we're going to be GREAT. The future is going to be even better. Crazy good players!!!
Kids want to play in the SEC! Just look at our recent uptick in recruiting.
And OU has 3 elite quarterbacks coming in through 2025:
Arnold this year, Hawkins in 2024 and Sherry in 2025.

This cant be, Riley headed out west, OU cant recruit QB's without him. lol
Murray has done a great job getting running backs. Back to back years he has brought in two top backs, OU has always had solid backs but I dont ever remember bringing in 4 elite backs in two years. Lets hope they all stay and finish as Sooners.
I guess "elite" is kind of a subjective term, but if Hawkins and Sherry are considered elite, then we can use an apples to apples comparison to come up with an answer.
This would be the third time it's happened, with the first being 2002 Noah Allen, 2003 Tommy Granger and 2004 Rhett Bomar. Interestingly, none of those guys had stellar careers at OU.
The second time it happened was 2007 Keith Nichol, 2008 Landry Jones and 2009 Blake Bell.
Of course, some of the best OU quarterbacks in history were guys who were not highly recruited coming out of high school
I think they're recruiting athletes. At least one of those QB's will end up at WR. It will give them depth at quarterback that BV saw the need of last season. And we are also recruiting a collection of RB's I'd suspect that one of them ends up at wide. If we get some really good blockers to make everything work, these recruits may turn out to be pretty good.
I don't believe Hawkins or Sperry will be tried at any other position, and you can't assume Arnold will be injury-free.
The quarterback position is similar to pitching in baseball... you can never have too much.... and last year was graphic proof of this for OU. Venables wants to safeguard his QB depth as OU enters the SEC.
As for the WR position, OU has already received commitments from five for the 2024 class and may be after more.
No way Hawkins is coming to OU to eventually play another position. He would transfer first
The thing is, if it were the old days, that might work. But good quarterbacks aren't going to sit around and not start. Maybe they'll learn as freshmen, but not long after that. Optimal is probably three. But guys who are able to start elsewhere, are not going to hang around.
We had recruited quality quarterbacks prior to last season. Three of them started.... at USC, USC and SMU.
All I know is headed to the sec we're in good hands with Jackson and OUr stable of running backs. Add in OUr young studs in the secondary? You guys better hang on! We're gonna crash the sec. Bank it. 👍
All true, but depth at QB is vital for any team and that’s what OU is trying to do…with full understanding that one or two may transfer later on. But that’s a concern for another day.
Sperry’s family, by the way, has moved to Oklahoma so they can see their son play at OU.
Again, OU learned a lesson….many lessons….last year and one was how important it is to have at least two good QB’s. In fairness to Beville, OU had no QB backing up Gabriel. Now they have two on board with two more looming in the next two years. How this will pan out is anyone’s guess, but it tells me that OU won’t be having issues at the most important position.
I tend to agree and this goes for every program. These guys aren't likely to wait "their turn" pre transfer portal days. Maybe Brent's culture first approach changes that for a few of them but I fully understand a kid that is backup material at Oklahoma wanting to go be the guy at a lesser program like Oklahoma State or Tulsa.
I have always heard and read that college coaches want to bring in one quarterback each year. Venables seems to adhere to that idea.
Have we ever had a quality QB move to another position and contribute? Maybe but I don’t remember anyone except maybe Blake Bell.

The only one I can recall (and I had to go way, way back) was quarterback Eric Mitchel from the mid-80's. He was a very talented wishbone quarterback, but got stuck behind Jamelle Holieway (and later Charles Thompson) on the depth chart. Switzer moved him to running back, and he started a few games. Put up some decent stats. He scored 6 TD's and averaged over 8 yards per carry at the running back position.
Paul Thompson had a brief stint at wide receiver before Rhett Bomar got kicked off the team. He looked to be capable at that position but didn't put up any big numbers.
All Paul did, was win a Big XII title back when that really meant something. UT won the natty the year before that. We played for multiple ones in the first decade of the 21st century, and won one. Runner up in 03, 04 and 08. If we hadn't had to play Florida in Florida and LSU in Nawlins, would have won more. especially if key players hadn't been hurt just before the BCS title game.
Yes, we're in agreement. I was referring to his performance as a wide receiver, not quarterback.
Let him come in for a hurt Jason White, and who knows....I Believe he gets the win that day.
Yeah, I’ve always thought that was Bob’s worse decision. Jason just wasn’t capable of playing. Just over 100 yards passing and only 30% completion. Thompson should have played QB late in the game. But then Mark Clayton’s big drop in the end zone. Total disaster.
