Stoops' Salary...

Wish I was a defensive coordinator in division I football. Heck I could do as good of a job of coaching linebackers as Kish does and the OU could pay me half of his salary and I'd be happy.

With the huge coaching shuffle this year. Not one new coach thought enough of Mike Stoops, to offer even interest, as a possible DC. If we somehow win the NC, we our stuck with that boat anchor. He and Kish our sucking it up recruiting. I think a lot of it is other programs, telling recruits, both will be gone after the season.

One very definite Downside to winning the Big One...

Threw in age, because it seemed to me that defensive coaches are usually a little older. Most good offensive coaches are younger minds/philosophy -

One thing that has made Saban so successful, is he doesn't allow even winning a national title prevent him from looking at his program and looking at the weak points and/or ways he can make his team/staff better. Winning a national title does not mean your program is perfect or doesn't have areas that can be better.

Mike Stoops is a back-and-forth subject every year. He has absolutely horrible failures, but then his defenses also have great showings. And like this year and last, his defenses start playing much better towards the end of the season. My issue with Mike Stoops is at a place like OU, his defenses should be finishing at the top of the Big XII in defense year after year. But they don't. I think OU led the Big XII in total defense a couple of years ago, but the last couple of seasons OU has finished about mid-pack. And Mike has an automatic benefit in not having to defend against the top offense in the conference...OU!!! All other Big XII teams have OU's offense factoring into their defensive stats.

He has been fantastic in his first year. But the true test of Riley will be keeping the program playing at a high level over the next handful of years as well. Riley was handed a team this year that was primed to make a run already.
Riley was handed Baker Mayfield, Mark Andrews and a stellar offensive line, but minus Mixon, Perine and Westbrook who represented about 40% of OU’s 2016 offensive output. No one with real knowledge of this team prior to this season could have predicted being this close to a national championship right now.
In my opinion, what Riley was handed was....himself. I think the best is yet to come in the post Baker Mayfield future. My only concern is how and when OU starts recruiting defensive talent that its offensive talent can be proud of.

Ya Riley had to replace those guys, but the talent to replace them were already on the roster. Plus the position coaches were already in place to develop the kids that stepped up to replace them. I am simply talking about the future in regards to replacing the talent that Bob Stoops had loaded up prior to him leaving, and also coaching hires in the future if they will be great hires or not. Though I do think Riley has shown he is more than capable or getting top-notch offensive talent to OU, I agree with you CT the real weak area is recruiting to the defense.

Agree, the talent was on the roster, but no one knew for certain how good it was going to be right away....not until September 9th when guys like Smallwood, Sermon and Morris scored touchdowns and Lamb, Badet, Calcaterra, Adams and Jones figured so much in a 31-16 win in Columbus. Rodney Anderson was yet to explode with only 10 yards in 3 carries and one reception for 12 yards. Now he is on the way to becoming another great Oklahoma running back.
Bob Stoops obviously knew what the future looked like and picked his time....the right time....to retire. He left a solid program with a solid foundation behind him. That's why I believe that OU's future after Mayfield leaves is so promising.

When has Mike Stoops been good?

A backup QB come in during the game?
A hurt starting QB?

When has he sucked?

More then half the games, every year, he's been at OU.
Back up QB has best game of his career and MS knew he was starting!
Teams keep doing the exact same thing and MS makes no adjustments.
Allows a QB to break the NCAA record against OU for the most passing yards against OU.
Maybe the worst Oline in Texass history and still has trouble
Goes to a 4 man front and uses 2 LB's .
A LB mows through his defense

When has he been average? That's top 35-65 DC

About a 3rd of every games
