There are many, many reasons why beating OSU, winning the Big12 conference and getting in the playoffs would be so meaningful for the program. Here are just a few:
1) Great for recruiting
2) Build momentum for the future
3) Make the Sooners relevant again.
4) Set the stage for a national championship run THIS season
Yes, all that's true. But I can't help thinking about two guys, specifically, Sterling Shepard and Baker Mayfield, and how beating OSU would directly reflect on their impact. First, there's Shepard, the lifelong Sooner, who's father died of a heart attack when he was 6, and this being his last opportunity to make and leave his mark on the field as a Sooner, and how significant and deserving that accomplishment would be for the best WR to ever put on a Sooner uniform. The guy has been great for four years. He's made so many big plays over his career. The pre-game ceremony where Brian Bosworth handed Sterling the "Sooners Illustrated," with his father on the cover, signed by all the guys from the 1985 national championship team, really brought home how important Sterling has been to the program.
And then there's Baker Mayfield, the unwanted kid with the chip on his shoulder out to prove everyone wrong. He plays with passion and heart, never knows when to go down, and just keeps fighting, play after play. He's breathed life in to the season and uplifted everyone around him.
These two guys have made this year special. Their talent and heart are rare. There are many reasons for wanting OU to win out and finish strong. Selfishly as fans, we always want to win it all. And when you have a great team, there are always great players that make it happen.
But honestly, I'm hard pressed to think of two guys I've ever enjoyed seeing more play in a Sooner uniform than Shepard and Mayfield. Many of us here have been around the block, seen and felt a lot of disappointment and come to expect the worst. It's refreshing to feel good again. And the two guys I'll never forget from this team are Sterling Shepard and Baker Mayfield.
