Sunday Summary
Sex, Golf, and College Football Ws. No matter how much of an incompetent mess you make of these things, they all beat the hell of their binary alternatives (as long as nobody gets hurt). As frustrating as yesterday's OU win feels, we all know from far too many recent experiences that it's vastly better than any version of a loss. Maybe there's even some aspect of the uneven, awkward, unimpressive experience that we can take away and use to improve our next round?
I had been worried about a clunker on the horizon following the Texas win. I had hoped the Bye week and coming back home was going to be enough to give us time to gather ourselves and refocus fully forwards. Clearly not. Starting RB (Walker) suspended for internal discipline, Replacement OL consistently beaten and lacked cohesion, Offensive gameplan felt overly conservative (again), and DG played like he was primarily trying to avoid a mistake most of the game. Despite all of these things, we're waking up today feeling way better than either collapsing and previously-undefeated UNC, or "moral victor" Houston. We weren't the only team coming off an epic effort that played unevenly (Texas, Washington, and Oregon to name a few). As discussed previously, yesterday's game had all of the hauntingly familiar markings of a game that OU has lost with troubling regularity in the past 15 years. For the 3rd time this year (Cincy and ISU) we've faced real adversity, risen to the occasion, and found a way to win. At the end of the day, that beats a lovely Friday afternoon in the office, or another Saturday night at home alone every time.
Next week's test question will be whether or not we can manufacture a Texas-sized effort in game-plan, preparation, and execution in a tricky road game against a hot/cold opponent that we're expected to win.
On the national scene, Penn State showed they continue to be a worse version of Ohio State, who in turn is just a worse version of Michigan. Without an offensively dominant SEC team out there this year, it continues to feel like Michigan can just python squeeze its way through everybody. The only teams with the roster and depth to win 2 playoff games appear to be Michigan, UGA, Alabama, and barely Ohio State (in that order). Texas losing Ewers has removed them from this short list.
USC won't get/earn significant attention in the Summary moving forward. Just enjoy watching them lose 5 of their last 6 games this season, and bask in the comforting warmth of the dumpster fire that USC stole from us. Couldn't be happening to a more deserving guy. #Karma
