That’s funny! I remember those mascots being introduced around 2004. Fans called them mullet heads. Never felt like a traditional mascot.
The sound system was always my main concern. As you can tell, it has been awhile since I have made it to a game 😬. Do the lights seem brighter overall?
Lights definitely have the range of illumination to be very bright. I really like the sound system. When they started the pump up music!!!! When the "Seven Nations Army" starts it beats in the chest and the crowd chants. The difference in the crowd enthusiasm this year versus last year is beyond belief. I must admit that the flyovers from Tinker AFB coupled with the national anthem brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of the pride I harbored during my military days.
The sound system is 425,000 watts with 24 subwoofers. There's no shortage of sound these days.
Given the number of steps in a stadium, how is this not a liability issue? Universities are risk-adverse and I'm sure this was vetted by some attorney, but this just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. An older person can easily misstep when headed for the John if suddenly gets zapped by lights out or even strobing (which can induce seizures for some medical conditions - "photosensitive epilepsy"; I know that sounds odd, but it exists). Not sure the reward outweighs the risks here.
Grew up with a friend that was a photoepileptic. It's been decades, but it's permanently engraved in my noggin when we were playing a Commodore 64 game back in the 80s and it started flashing colors on its EVG screen and he went into an epilepsy. Scary.
No doubt. And most stroke survivors have the same photosensitive condition - can't deal with strobing. But honestly the steps thing - especially when jostled in a crowd - is what would worry me the most. People around you suddenly flailing around because we scored and then darkness...any unsure footed person on the steps is going to be challenged. And gawd forbid this scenario - two players running at each other to do the celebratory leaping body slam, but then darkness, ill-timed leaps and an injury.
When it first happened I thought there was a light glitch too because it seemed sporadic. Maybe my issue was because we used it against Kent st when we finally scored. It was just unusual

Sorry to hear about that buddy. I am kind of sensitive to strobing too. I saw the lights dim to eclipse again and again, and thought the camera guy hit the hippie lettuce a little too hard.
In that case, it's powered by more than 30 digital amplifiers. I watched it being installed during construction of the new south endzone. The audio cables are huge.
The stadium doesn't go dark. It's still well lit by the video boards. I'd call in a "dimming," but at no point was I unable to clearly see my surroundings.
Do they ever plan to get a new video board in the north endzone to match the one they have in the south endzone? Exciting to hear stuff about future upgrades.

Never was in the military but have family that was. I feel the same when I hear the anthem, watch the fly overs, and see images and sounds from Sooners of the past. It comes from a sense of pride for my country and team as well as the nostalgia from the years gone by. Where I was at the time & the memories invoked. There is nothing like giving high fives to those seated near you that you have never even met, but you now share a common thread…your love for the Sooners. My best memories are the OU/Nebraska game in 2000.
I think that's still part of the plan. There are now new plans to build a $175 million football facility on the NE corner of Jenkins and Lindsey as well.
Heard about that. I foresee that as being offices for football related support positions. Of course they will match the architecture and look great I’m sure. Thad Turnipseed is taking the “it takes a village” approach to building a national champion and I love it! The more positions and the more eyes on the prize the better.
If I am not mistaken, I believe there are future plans to upgrade the north end zone seating. Upper deck type design that I have not seen. Going to or near 100k capacity. I have no idea about schedule or timing but I believe OU have charted fund raising or donor dollars.
I LIKED your post, because I agree. But OUr players seemed to like the lights off, and the fans shining flashlights.
