TL;DR does apply here. Just an opinion from another resident idiot here.
QB - DG is a solid QB, nothing more and nothing less. Him overthrowing and missing some relatively easy throws still concerns me too, but we have way too many fans on here acting like he's the worst QB of all time. He threw 3 TD and 1 INT yesterday, on a windy day. I'll take that stat line every single game. Statistically, he was a Top 15 QB last year. I know, I know. In crucial situations, he doesn't always make the play, but it's not like never makes plays in crucial situations. He does and did last year, he's just very hit and miss in that dept. Again, I think a lot of the criticism of DG is unfair considering he followed 4 LEGENDS in Bake, Kyler, Jalen, and Caleb. And onto JA, is JA more talented than DG? Without question. But he's still a TRUE FRESHMAN, and chances are he's not quite ready yet. DG is more than capable of leading the team to 10 wins if the defense can be respectable. Hell the team should've at the very least won 8 last year and that was with one of the worst defenses in the country. Beville had a really good stat line, but that first long pass to DJ was an absolute AWFUL throw. It was like a damn punt. Dude looks better, but better still is ass.
RB - Hard to really judge them from yesterday considering the OL was missing 2 starts in Rouse & Sexton. There really weren't any running lanes the entire day. Best play of the day was by Smothers, that was quite a run. I think he's going to be a good player. And he honestly looks eerily similar to a young Demarco in that #7 (minus the long hair). Maybe it's just the same number, but I think he even moves similar to Demarco. Very smooth. I think if Barnes and Major can get healthy, then the RB room is going to be more than fine. This may be the most stacked RB room I can remember in some time. Been hearing some whispers that Major could portal, but who knows. Not a death blow if he does, dude just can't stay healthy at all.
TE - Stogner looked like solid ole Stog to me, and had a nice sideline catch early in the game. Blake Smith had a nice TD, and he's a big boy. I wonder if he and Fanuel (#80) will see the field once Helms and Llewellyn return. I still think they should get the guy from N Texas.
WR - I too have concerns about this unit, but I think people are overreacting some. Nic Anderson didn't even play yesterday, and I think ppl are forgetting that Keyon Brown and Pettaway aren't even on campus yet. Both of those guys could contribute immediately. I think the unit will at worst be solid. Farooq is capable of a 1,000 yard season. I think Freeman is really good. We all know Drake is Mr. Reliable. And then onto the unknowns like Anthony, Anderson, LVBS. I think Anthony will end up being a 35 - 40 catch guy for 500 yds, and 5 TDs. Anderson, it's still hard to say since we haven't really ever seen him play, but ppl were raving about him in the spring. LVBS is someone who I think could be alright. So, to me, there is reason for concern since there are so many unknowns, but there is also a lot of talent already on the roster and incoming. Not to mention if Brennen Thompson ends up coming to Norman. I do think Brown or Pettaway will make significant contributions or could start early in the season. And last, but certainly least is Jayden Gibson. I haven't completely given up on the kid, my goodness he's been downright terrible. His first chance to make a play last year came in the TCU game. DG hit him right in stride over the middle and he dropped it. Could've been a TD too. Then yesterday, he has to make that 2 pt conversion catch. The first drop was a fairly tough catch, but he should've caught it. Dude is clearly in his head. If I'm the coaching staff, I get him on the field early in Game 1 and give him some opportunities to redeem himself. But if he starts dropping passes against Ark St, I'd be done with him at that point.
And as for DJ Graham. I think he could be a very nice player. He looks very natural out there and has very good ball skills. I think he could end up surprising everyone.
OL - Not going to spend much time here, they didn't look good at all. But with a makeshift line, I'll reserve judgement until a later time. Thought Cayden Green looked decent considering he should still be in HS.
DE - Wow, it's amazing how much this room has improved in 4 months. Bothroyd is a Day 1 starter, opposite of either RMT or Downs. I think Grimes will end up transferring. And the play that PJ Adebawore made on Hicks yesterday was INSANE. It's pretty obvious that he's raw, but I could see a world where he's starting come mid-season. He's the real deal IMO, and once he adds some weight then I can see why Josh thinks he's a future 1st rounder. I thought Ford looked good out there too. I feel like I'm forgetting someone. And who knows, maybe one of the summer enrolled freshman make a splash.
DL - Halton impressed me more than anyone yesterday including Coe. That kid has a great motor. Coe and Kelley both played well. I saw Sears make some plays, and he knows how to get skinny. I think he's going to have much more of an impact than what we saw from JJ last year as an xfer guy. What about Jacob Lacey, did he just not play yesterday? I remember Ashton Sanders making a play too I believe. I can't remember Laulu doing much, but I think he's going to be good there once he gets his weight up. I think the interior DL will be much improved here.
***I do agree that the DL looks much improved, but as with all spring games, gotta take it with a grain of salt. I don't think the OL was very formidable, so I don't want to get too carried away***
LB - The guy that caught my eye the most was Kip Lewis. I don't care if he's light in the ass, that kid just finds the football. He's so rangy and fast. I like him. Stutsman and Kanak both looked good, and I remember seeing Kobie stone a couple of guys at the LOS. I think this is easily the best LB unit we've had in years. Maybe since the late 2000s or early 2010s. I think they're going to be very good this year. and this doesn't even include Sam Ogimisgho (sp?) and Lewis Carter who BV has a man crush on.
And now onto DFM (Dasan FVCKING McCullough) - No offense to Harrington, but I can't see how DFM doesn't start Day 1. All he does is make play after play. He's the real deal. I think Harrington looked good too, but I don't think he's quite on DFM's level.
DB - Peyton Bowen is the real deal. He reminds me so much of Brodney Pool in how he's built and moves. That first INT was a thing of beauty. When was the last time an OU DB tracked a ball in the air for that long and then actually made the catch? He also had some nice tackles. I think he's going to basically be a starter or playing "starter minutes" from Day 1. Now, I haven't really seen anyone talk about how he's the one that got beat on that last TD catch by Freeman. He actually had pretty good coverage, and he made a good recovery but it was a perfect throw. So, while he was great, he did give up a TD too. Pearson looks like a dude as well. RSJ is also someone that I think will play alot if healthy. Bowman is always going to be good, and Key is a nice depth piece player but I can't see him playing a ton unless there are some injuries.
I don't really remember the corners doing much all day. Dolby looks very physical, but gave up some plays. I must have missed it, but don't remember seeing Gentry out there. I know he played, but don't remember much from him. Woodi is a stud, not worried there. But it will be interesting to see who is the other starting corner. I don't think any conclusions can be made after yesterday. I imagine that battle will go on leading up to the 1st game. There's definitely a lot to like there though with young guys like Gentry, Dolby, Vickers, and Wagoner. That second corner spot does worry me some though.
