If this team is to have any chance of winning an NCAA, Spangler has to pick it up offensively. This has nothing to do with his blown chippy at the end. This wasn't a chip shot. This was an uncontested lay in.
I actually think it helps this team to have not won. They don't have the depth to stand up very well playing three games in three days. And they are very likely a top four seed in the NCAA's. Of course depending on which regional you end up in, you might be a whole lot better served being a three than a four. I don't want to see our short team with a short bench, playing Kentucky. Shudder at the thought. If they were to somehow make a regional final, then you live with it.
But that is cart before the horse. If Spangler can't spend enough time working on his shot in the next four days, to the point where he will take an open 12 footer, then this team isn't going anywhere. He has been pretty solid on defense, a very good rebounder and usually good at finishing around the basket. But in the last three weeks, his offensive confidence has gone in the toilet. I don't think it's about effort or lack of talent. But he has to turn it around fast. We are close to playing four on five on offense. It impacts even the possibilities of open looks from the arc. Tonight, most of the potential opportunities had a long armed hand not just in the face, but on the ball. And part of that is those guys have to give no concern to Spangler even considering a move to the basket when he catches it on the low block. We cannot run our offense that way against any good defensive team.
Another factor in the early NCAA rounds will be officiating. I thought tonight both teams had some bad breaks from the stripes, but I thought we go more breaks than they did. That started right after Lon threw his temper tantrum. But I loved the way five of the six tournament games were called from the quarterfinals round. They are letting the teams play and I thought it was fun to watch. In the early rounds of the NCAA's, touch fouls will be common, especially in the first round. To get through the round of 64 takes 96 officials. And there aren't close to that many good officials in the NCAA . Throw in that a few in the early rounds come from not too great conferences with guys who made it less on merit and more on local politics.
It means that guys that really don't know how to let quality teams play, allowing game flow, call too many should-be-passed-on fouls. It means that your best guys, especially those who play inside, end up too commonly in foul trouble, often unfairly. Given how Spangler had these issues for a large part of the middle of the conference schedule, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't have to sit inconveniently in foul trouble.
We'll see. I think the missed chip shot hurt OU very little, unless it puts them in a four or even five seed in the Kentucky bracket. If they stay a three has some, even most seem to have projected, then they'll have a decent chance to win a game or two. A sweet 16 would be a good accomplishment for this group. But they'll need the big guys to play big. All of them. Right now, we can scarcely count on that happening.
