spangler

He's done enough heroics to not deserve call outs, but that's a shot he'll never forget. He's going to have a long and miserable night.

Chip shot at the end to tie it. That's all you can ask for. Woodard had a good game. Love that mid-range jumper. Our backcourt next year will be one of the best in the country (assuming Buddy comes back).

Notre Dame just beat Duke. That may knock either Baylor or OU down to a four seed.

Now we await our draw...

Recognizing the fact that he missed a point blank lay up that would have put us into overtime isn't calling him out. Its stating the facts. I would have liked to have seen us play Kansas again.

I've seen this team play four games this year. I am by no means a coach but played BB many years ago in a very small high school (C Class). I wonder how much time OU puts into dribbling and passing drills? This team looks undisciplined about 70% of the time. No ball control. Woodard is a good player but he turned the ball over several times without interference from ISU. This team frustrates the hell out of me.

I want accusing you of calling him out. It was a pre-emptive statement.
I see how it's misinterpreted after reading it though.

If this team is to have any chance of winning an NCAA, Spangler has to pick it up offensively. This has nothing to do with his blown chippy at the end. This wasn't a chip shot. This was an uncontested lay in.

I actually think it helps this team to have not won. They don't have the depth to stand up very well playing three games in three days. And they are very likely a top four seed in the NCAA's. Of course depending on which regional you end up in, you might be a whole lot better served being a three than a four. I don't want to see our short team with a short bench, playing Kentucky. Shudder at the thought. If they were to somehow make a regional final, then you live with it.

But that is cart before the horse. If Spangler can't spend enough time working on his shot in the next four days, to the point where he will take an open 12 footer, then this team isn't going anywhere. He has been pretty solid on defense, a very good rebounder and usually good at finishing around the basket. But in the last three weeks, his offensive confidence has gone in the toilet. I don't think it's about effort or lack of talent. But he has to turn it around fast. We are close to playing four on five on offense. It impacts even the possibilities of open looks from the arc. Tonight, most of the potential opportunities had a long armed hand not just in the face, but on the ball. And part of that is those guys have to give no concern to Spangler even considering a move to the basket when he catches it on the low block. We cannot run our offense that way against any good defensive team.

Another factor in the early NCAA rounds will be officiating. I thought tonight both teams had some bad breaks from the stripes, but I thought we go more breaks than they did. That started right after Lon threw his temper tantrum. But I loved the way five of the six tournament games were called from the quarterfinals round. They are letting the teams play and I thought it was fun to watch. In the early rounds of the NCAA's, touch fouls will be common, especially in the first round. To get through the round of 64 takes 96 officials. And there aren't close to that many good officials in the NCAA . Throw in that a few in the early rounds come from not too great conferences with guys who made it less on merit and more on local politics.

It means that guys that really don't know how to let quality teams play, allowing game flow, call too many should-be-passed-on fouls. It means that your best guys, especially those who play inside, end up too commonly in foul trouble, often unfairly. Given how Spangler had these issues for a large part of the middle of the conference schedule, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't have to sit inconveniently in foul trouble.

We'll see. I think the missed chip shot hurt OU very little, unless it puts them in a four or even five seed in the Kentucky bracket. If they stay a three has some, even most seem to have projected, then they'll have a decent chance to win a game or two. A sweet 16 would be a good accomplishment for this group. But they'll need the big guys to play big. All of them. Right now, we can scarcely count on that happening.

Plaino,

I don't know what has happened to Ryan. Perhaps it's confidence. Maybe it's a nagging injury. I dunno. He has seemed to fumble the ball a lot towards the end of the season. He's not even trying any jumpers.

His passing has suffered too. In first half of the season, he was a solid passer. He had one game where he approached double digit assists.

Here's to hoping he can return back to the Spangler from earlier this year. Regardless, I just love his work ethic/grit.

Last night was the first game I have watched in a couple of weeks and I was surprised that Spangler didn't play any better than he did. He threw the ball away twice and missed that game tying layup. As Plaino said, he is going to have to pick up his game because he is an important part of the team.

Bottom line everybody needs to pick it up. I know Hield won the Big 12 POY but we really don't have that horse to carry us.

speaking of Spangler....what the hell has happened to his jump shot??! Granted...it's never been a thing of beauty..but the first half of this season it look MUCH IMPROVED over last year...and lately (last several games) it seems that he's just got ZERO touch on it. Barely drawing iron on most of them and it's clear from his body language that he's got zero confidence when he takes a jumper. In fact, he's not even LOOKING to score unless he's on the low blocks. He take the pass at the high post and can be WIDE open to either jump from the free-throw line or drive the lane...and does neither. Just looks to pass and set a screen.

Like I said...just seems like his offense has regressed this past month..and we'll really need him playing well to make a good tourney run.

Edit: having looked through the rest of this thread...I see that others are noticing Spangler's issues as well. Pretty glaring that he's not as comfortable offensively as he was earlier in the year.
