NORMAN, Okla. — Lincoln Riley will hire Ohio State's Alex Grinch as his next defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. The Athletic's Bruce Feldman was the first to report the news.

Grinch spent the past year at Ohio State. Before that, he was at Washington State for three seasons, where he was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award while turning a defense outside the Top 100 into the No. 34 unit in the country.

When Grinch left to come to Columbus, the unit ranked 16th nationally, including seventh in the country in pass efficiency defense, ninth in turnovers forced with 28 and ranked fifth nationally in touchdowns allowed with just 11 on the season. The Cougars also managed an impressive 103 tackles for loss that year under Grinch's watch, the second highest total in Washington State history.
In each of the three seasons Grinch spent with the Cougars, his defense improved. After forcing just eight turnovers the year before he arrived, Washington State had 24 in 2015, 23 in 2016 and 28 in his final year in Pullman. Grinch was nominated for the Broyles Award three times during his time with the Cougars.

hey if we had the 72nd ranked D were probably playing on Monday!!!!

Ohio State fans were probably thinking if they had a good defense they could have stopped Purdue and would have been in the playoffs.
Sorry just not excited about him but we have to give him a chance, all we can do now.

Based on what he did at WSU working as the DC for offensive guru Mike Leach, he'll know what he has to do to improve OU's defense. Honestly, he was my second choice behind Golding but Lincoln Riley has access to tons of information that we, as fans, were simply not privy to. In that light, I have no doubt that Grinch is the right guy to lead our defense. Having worked under the second best head coach of our generation, Urban Meyer, has to be a plus.

I'm very optimistic that our defense will be considerably more coherent under Grinch that we were under Mike and Ruffin. Interesting that he played on a Division 3 Mount Union team that went something like 54-1 and produced the ISU head coach who's a pretty sharp young guy.

What I'm really interested in is which coaches on that side of the ball will be retained. My optimism will go into the dumpster if we retain guys like Kish, Diaco, and Cooks.

Hard crowd to please.
Sound like dems that would complain if President Trump cured cancer.
Grinch did a hell of a job when he was THE DC at WSU, in a pass happy conference. And I’m sure Leach taught him what makes it hard on spread offenses.
I’m happy as hell that we have new blood, who hopefully brings in some better position coaches and maybe an Ohio State defense recruit or 2.
Plus Mike Stoops is GONE!

I agree fully. Grinch is a DB, so I'm pretty sure he'll make an accurate assessment of Cooks. I've struggled to tell if Cooks is a poor coach or just handcuffed by a poor DC. Grinch will know quickly.

Diaco likely unneeded as an advisor.

Kish can kiss it.

Grinch is Gary Pinkel’s nephew.

Not sure he was really the DC at OSU with Schiano around but he did a ridiculous job for Leach at Washington State. They were actually offensively challenged for a few years but Grinch’s defense made sure they could win games.

Its an attacking defense focused on forcing turnovers.

Hope he does well for OU.

"Assuming that the details of Grinch's deal are the only thing keeping this from an official announcement, this would be an absolute home run hire for Riley. Oklahoma's defense, of course, was historically bad in the College Football Playoff era. Following the Orange Bowl loss to Alabama, the Sooners ended the season ranked 101st in points allowed per game, 102nd in yards per play allowed, 107th in points per drive allowed, 121st in turnovers forced and dead last in red zone touchdown percentage." He has no where to go but up.

Well, he could technically take us to 102nd, 103rd, 122nd, and dead last respectively. :D:D

Schiano was the true DC at tOSU. What Grinch did at WSU was nothing short of a miracle.

Young guy, great recruiter... This is what we need.

Helluva hire. Don't measure this guy off of 1 year at tOSU. That would be like saying the problem w/ OU's defense is Diaco

he was the co-DC he didnt call the plays, that was Shiano. He's a DB coach so should be a good hire, He sounds like he's very hands on, just what these young 4-5 star DB's need. I can see one of the more talented safeties committing to OU now. Only time will tell, but I like the hire.

Yep, not excited here either but maybe he can do something with that mess.
I think Ohio State ranked 72nd in total defense this season but OU was at 114. Hope he can fix it.

I am with you 67. Then again he did turn WSU around on D but this past season as CDC the Buckeyes werent exactly great in a league with not so great offensive teams. For me I will take the wait and see approach but one thing is fore sure if he can get OU D in the top 70 on D that would be an accoplishment.
