“For three quarters and five minutes or so of the fourth quarter, the Texas offensive strategy of controlling the ball and limiting Texas Tech's possessions worked as well as could be hoped.
Nevertheless, whenever the Texas defense was on the field, it was simply a disaster.
On every one of its possessions in the game, the Tech offense moved the ball at will. Tech never punted in the game. Tech gained 595 total yards, and if not for Texas holding the ball on offense, the yardage total would have been a lot higher. Tech was only stopped once the entire game - on a fourth-down stand by Texas.
For the entire game, only two things happened when Tech had the ball - it either scored points, or it turned the ball over. Tech turned the ball over four times - once on downs on the fourth-down stop, and three times on dumb, careless mistakes by Jett Duffey.
Jett Freakin' Duffey completed 37 of 47 passes against Texas for 444 yards and four touchdowns. The Texas defense made Duffey look like a Heisman candidate. If not for his three dumb turnovers, each of which was the result of truly careless ball handling and each of which occurred with Tech moving right down the field, Texas almost surely loses this game.
It was amazing to watch. Texas was simply, utterly defenseless in this game. It couldn't stop Tech and never did, except one fourth-down play. The offense completely overcame the defense in this game.
In the immediate aftermath of the game, I'm truly a bit dumbfounded at what happened.”
