The Saturday game was a strange one. The wind was blowing out hard to left. Not as hard as yesterday, but still over 20 consistently with higher gusts.. But the plate umpire was giving that pitch at the bottom of the knees most of the day, and KU's starter took advantage. Neither team hit a fly ball until the fifth. No homers as opposed to eight combined yesterday, six by the Sooners.
OU got two in the first. The national broadcasters said it was a bad call, when with two outs, Clifton came around from second on a ball up the middle knocked down by the shortstop. Her throw home beat Caleigh, but when the catcher applied the tag, her glove hit Clifton before she touched home with her hand, but the ball was in her other hand, when missed clearly before she got there. Then the Sooners got another run on Pendley's infield single, and OU led 2-0. Four hits. Only Clifton's bouncer over the pitcher's head into center, left the infield.
Then KU pitcher Alexis Reid retired ten straight, all on ground outs. No k's or anything in the air. But Lowary was better. Arnold led off the fifth with a swinging bunt past the KU third baseman for another IFH. Went to second on a hit and run ground out by Hatfield. Went to third on Dalton's right side grounder and scored on another Infield hit off the pitcher's glove.
OU got two in the sixth on a triple by Pendley, three feet fair down the line in right that scored Rogers, then scored on Mendes single to center. After KU got their only two runs in B6, OU added a sixth run on back to back doubles by Clifton and Knighten. Lowary got them in order in B7.
Lowary pitched the best game I've seen her pitch. The transformation that she and Lombardi have been working on, is close to complete. She pitched a complete game, throwing only 76 pitches. Two runs, three hits, only three strikeouts and one walk. She pitched to contact and let her defense do the work. And she made three sterling plays on grounders, none of them routine.
Maybe the most interesting thing in the game, was KU's coach causing a seven minute delay, arguing that OU couldn't shift the way they are, because Pendley plays right and Mendes center, when her righties batted. I think she was just trying to cool Lowary off.
OU is now 9-0 in the conference. In a shocker, winless in conference play Iowa State, beat OSU 10-9, giving the Cowgirls their first loss in the conference, putting OU alone in first in the Big XII.
