NORMAN, OK — The Oklahoma Sooners dropped a gut-wrenching 7-4 decision to No. 3 Texas at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Thursday, extending their losing streak to five games. Despite leading until the seventh inning, Oklahoma couldn’t hold off a late Longhorn rally, leaving the Sooners desperate to salvage the series.

Kyson Witherspoon delivered a good performance for Oklahoma, rebounding from a rough outing against Kentucky last week. The Sooners’ ace threw a season-high in pitches (107), logging 6.1 innings with 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts. His effort kept Texas at bay early, but the bullpen couldn’t close the door.

Oklahoma struck first in the bottom of the first when Trey Gambill, hit by a pitch to lead off, scored on a wild pitch to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead. Texas answered in the third, capitalizing on a throwing error by first baseman Mason Hamlin, which allowed Tommy Farmer IV to score and tie the game at 1-1.

Gambill put Oklahoma back in front in the third with a solo home run, making it 2-1. The Sooners extended their lead in the fifth when Easton Carmichael’s double drove in Dawson Willis, pushing the score to 3-1.

The game’s turning point came in the seventh. Texas’ Adrian Rodriguez led off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball that slipped past Carmichael, and the Longhorns loaded the bases with walks. Farmer IV delivered a clutch 2-run single to knot the game at 3-3.

Texas seized the lead in the eighth when Kimble Schuessler’s single scored Rylan Galvan, making it 4-3. Oklahoma responded in the bottom inning, with Jaxon Willits’ RBI single scoring Carmichael to tie it 4-4. But the Longhorns landed the decisive blow in the ninth, as a 3-run homer sent a dagger through the Sooners’ hopes, sealing a 7-4 victory.

Trey Gambill (1-for-4) sparked Oklahoma’s offense, scoring twice, including his third-inning homer. Easton Carmichael (2-for-3) continued his hot streak, contributing a run and an RBI. For Texas, Tommy Farmer IV’s 3-run single in the seventh and the ninth-inning homer proved pivotal.

With their losing streak now at five, Oklahoma faces immense pressure in the series. A win is critical not only to snap the skid but also to gain momentum heading into the SEC Tournament. A series victory over their archrival would provide a résumé-boosting ranked win and keep the Sooners at .500 in conference play—a tall order in the ultra-competitive SEC. Beyond the standings, bragging rights over Texas are always on the line, and Oklahoma is hungry to claim them.

The Sooners and Longhorns square off in game two of the series Friday, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
