I hope that Mike Stoops has the wherewithal to control his urge to jump into the DBs face instead of letting the new DB coach handle the on field coaching.....wait.....did I not read that Mike is going to be in the coaches box this year? Wonder if Mike's explosions and rants last year had anything to do with that move?

BW, I can't remember where I heard/read that, but it was today.... I will try to go back and find it because when I read it, I wondered the same thing.

EDIT: Actually, Murdock's article on the home page "suggest" that Mike may coach from up stairs this year, but I can't see it.

The DC has a better view of the field from the box. Easier to see where the mistakes are happening and then relay the message to the field coaches, or put the player on the headphones and let him know what he is doing wrong.

No argument about that, but I don't believe that Mike Stoops has never coached from the box. If he does, I do think it will be because he was instructed to do so.

I think we got a little look at what the issue was when Julian Wilson came off the field after Baylor scored on that first drive after halftime. Wilson was pissed and they got that encounter on video for everyone to see. No telling how many other times DBs got in Mike's face in the 2nd half of the season when the passing defense was just awful.

I will be surprised if Mike Stoops goes to the box. I like having the defensive coordinator on the field, simply because it's easier to communicate to the players. You can make adjustments easier during the game because you can meet with the entire defense on the sidelines. In my opinion it also makes it easier to call the game, because you can get a better feel for the game. On the field you can see the defensive line and the linebackers just as easy as you can upstairs.

I've coached high school football from the box and the sideline. I would much rather be on the sideline for the reasons that I gave above.

Yelling and getting in the players face is fine when you are winning. It makes you look desperate and out of control when your defense stinks

I disagree runningback, I too have coached from both, and think the offensive coaches should be on the field so that they can get a better feel for the game, while the DC needs to be up high so he can make sure all gaps are being covered. From the field you cant see what the front 7 are doing every play. Put Mike upstairs and Montgomery on sideline, Monty can talk to the group if needed, and Mike can talk to individual guys through the headsets.

Then a lot of really good coaches are "desperate and out of control".

It is the "style" of many coaches but it doesn't work with every player.

Bama...I have heard the same thing 3rd or 4th over rumor from a high end donor that Mike will be in the press box next season. Needless to say I don't put much stock in that kind of conversation until it actually happens....but where there is smoke there is fire.

Thanks BW...

what is the most surprising thing about our football team over the last five years is that I thought Mike would come back and get the defense rolling. My first guess was that he just didn't have the athletes he needed...the jury has been out on that for a while and if that was actually the case then it is still on his shoulders as he has had time to recruit the ones he wanted/needed. The whole defensive debacle is still a head scratcher....maybe this is the cure? I certainly hope so as it was painful to watch them the last half of the season.

Put me on the list as feeling the same way 83. I was cautiously optimistic when Mike came back, but nonetheless I was optimistic. The offenses in this conference are much different than during his first tenure at OU, but I figured he would find a way to slow them down much better than the BrentV debacles we saw.

But here we are 3 seasons later and the defense has gotten just awful. I can think of 2 key differences between now and when Mike was here the first time. First, like I said the offenses in this conference have completely transformed than what Mike faced prior to him leaving. And second, BrentV is no longer here. Could one of those two things be the defining difference, or prolly a combination of both? Maybe we underestimated just how potent the combo of BrentV and Mike together was?

I to thought Mike would be a great addition and that he could recapture the magic he once had at OU. Instead, it has gotten progressively worse to the point where Mike seems to have given into the flawed logic that you just can't stop these big 12 offenses. I think Ohio State proved that wrong against Oregon. In my opinion, this is a make or break year for Mike Stoops.

No secondary can improve, much less succeed, if there is no prominent pass rush. Quarterbacks must be hurried or they will pick apart even the best secondaries.

Mike's aggressive, in your face attitude was perfect for the hungry guys being given no respect when he first got here. They responded to nasty screaming positively.

The players are different, the aggressive play calling is gone, but the screaming is still there.

Everyone except for Ontei Jones. I hope Mike can turn it around I always like seeing his emotion, good or bad.

Since his return, this is the 2nd Co-Coordinator that has left Mike Stoops. Venables and now Montgomery. This is telling and also somewhat troubling.

I think in BrentV's case it was more of feeling as if he had been demoted back to Co-DC after being the lone DC for many years after Mike left. And I really don't blame him. I don't think BrentV would have had any issues working around Mike since they were a great pair before. I just feel it was more of a "slap in the face" to BrentV that he decided to leave for Clemson.

Hard to say about Monty. If he had left for another college program, then I think the red flags would be pretty obvious. But he is leaving for the Packers, which is a clear-cut promotion going forward in his career.

View it anyway you wish. That's two Co-ordinators that split on Bob Stoops and Mke Stoops.

I view it as a huge pay increase....I have moved several times for the same reason. Can't blame either. If you want to view it as leaving Bob then you should also consider that working for Bob gives you a huge opportunity to learn and advance in your career.

83, it's happened. Twice. MS is not good for Bob these days. Show me where he is.

WNAS...never said he was, but the others have gone on to greener pastures....that was my point.

A
pretty good slap in the face to Bob after naming him
Co-coordinator...still stick with what I said in an earlier post. I am
shocked that Mike did not come in and fix issues or at least maintain
what Brent had been doing. Maybe Brent was the brain behind the radical
screaming from Mike...dunno.

He isn't going to resign until he has another gig lined up. Its hard for these guys to walk away from that much money

Coe, I have no problem seeing my front 7. I position myself at an angle behind the offense, and I can see if we are covering our gaps correctly. Having a good set of eyes in the box helps me with the coverage, but normally I can see what we are doing wrong with the front 7 from the sideline. Some coaches are more comfortable in the box, I am more comfortable on the sideline. Easier for me to make in game adjustments, and the biggest plus is being there to talk to the defense during timeouts. Just one guy's opinion.
