SCOOPHD: Lincoln Riley (Bedlam Week - Monday)
We'll start with Lincoln Riley's line of the day when talking on redshirt frosh LT Orlando Brown -- Brown has been picking up personal foul penalties regularly. While it's certainly a negative, I like Riley's take on it as well:
"He's young but the thing is he's aggressive. And I'd sure rather have to pull the reigns on him than have to spur him. And we don't have to spur him. He's aggressive. He brings an attitude to it. Does he have to learn how to control it at times? Yes. Can he not make the same mistakes that he's made over and over? Yes. But he'll grow into that. He's done everything that we've asked him to do at the toughest position in football. And we expect him to continue to do that.
How about Brown's thoughts -- how does he toe the line of playing physically and playing recklessly?
"I don't mind being known as an aggressive player. I just don't want to be known as a stupid player," said Brown
Wise beyond his years. Really like Zeus.
* Riley said both Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon were able to 'get around a little bit' ... Keep in mind Monday is normally a rather light day for everyone involved.
* Riley on offense performance vs. TCU said he really felt like they were turning a corner in the 2nd quarter ... comparing Baker Mayfield's somewhat to that of Iowa State in which they were trying too hard to make the special play.
"Okay. it wasn't his best game. (Mayfield) made some things happen like he does but a few of the things he really didn't need to make things happen," said Riley. "(Mayfield) played a little bit like we did early in the Iowa State game, trying to maybe make a little too much too make something happen -- great atmosphere, big game. We really started to settle in there in the second quarter and I felt like we were really about to take off but we both know he can play better."
* Statistically speaking it wasn't Mayfield's most impressive outing ... Playing in just the first half Mayfield completed just 9 of his 20 pass attempts for 126 yards and 2 TDs., perhaps the most surprising stat coming with the 51 percent completion percentage.
* Riley said it was still too early in the week to decide how snaps would be divided amongst the trio of signal callers Mayfield, Knight and Thomas.
"There'll just be a bigger chunk of reps for those guys and we'll make decisions as we go through the week," said Riley. "As we put together the gameplan some of those decisions are yet to be made, but there'll be a bigger chunk of reps for the 2nd and 3rd this week than what we've had before."
* Riley said he was too conservative in the 4th quarter ... much like Bob Stoops earlier in the day, Riley wasn't ready to throw quarterback Trevor Knight under the bus. Said there was a lot of 9,10 man football upon review of the game tape.
"Mixed bag. He made some nice plays. He made some nice plays where we didn't make the plays around him. We dropped a couple of big balls when he was in there. We busted a couple of routes when he was in there. Had a couple of protection issues, he was just kind of like the whole offense .. we played a lot of 9,10 man football which we haven't been doing the last five, six games. We've got to get back to the details and play a little bit better than that and Trevor is no different than that."
I kind of thought about it like this:
There was some good.
"The third quarter I think we had 200 yards of offense which is alot for a quarter," said Riley. "We were still clipping it off pretty good in the third quarter we just only got the one touchdown. We didn't turn the yards into points like we've been doing the last however many games."
There was some bad
And there was some really, really, really ugly
