In some respects, Muschamp was very unlucky at Florida. His last two years, their injury totals seemed off the charts. And they seemed to be terrific on defense, solid talent on offense, but yearly quarterback issues. And the lots of missing guys.
I think Will might take a lesson from Bob Stoops teams this season. It is a lot easier to play good defense if you have a lot of physicality in practice. You just learn more with practice is full tilt in practice with full contact. But that same philosophy can lead to losing a lot more players. And I also think it wears your players down more over the course of a season.
Bob cut way back on practice contact this year, especially in the pre-season. You didn't see any video this year of Oklahoma drills. And Bob even talked about cutting back on contact in the preseason. I believe that has paid a huge dividend in 2015. OU looked better in November than all but maybe one year of the Stoops era.
You have to make some personnel decisions without as much information about who might be better at some things ... like tackling. But I believe it was a great decision.
Muschamp is as hard nosed as Bob. But sometimes, less is better. I can't remember a year since 2000 that we've been this healthy at the end of a season. I don't think that is a coincidence.
