He's a coach they have to talk in coach speak. You had to watch one series and you knew. They can rarely say what they really know or think. It's part of being in that position.

I don't really understand the reasoning in this situation though. Its not like Kendall actually thought he was as good as Murray anyway.

It is always amazing when people don't seem to grasp the concept of keeping things close to your vest. When dealing with young kids such as college football players you just have to hold back on such things. It is not lying or being deceitful it is just not logical to hold back in revealing such things.

You don't think saying the QB battle was being deceitful? I do. Its like when politicians lie. They know they are lying.....we know they are lying....yet they do it anyway. Surely Kendall was not so fragile that he couldn't handle the obvious

No it wasn't deceitful. It's smart. There is no doubt in my mind that having a competition as stated by the HC kept both QBs focused and on point. When someone is pushing you, you tend to improve or implode.

If it is not known if Tua is ready to go for the semifinal game with OU do you think Saban will say so prior to the game? Even if he knows one way or the other? I doubt it. Its not something new that Coaches do, its called deflection. Why give your opponent any more info than they need? Goes for one game just as it does before the season starts. Its only a lie if you can prove it.

This.

Keep pushing Kyler and Austin.

I tend to lean toward Mordecai as the guy for next year but we'd all be fools to think Kendall isn't capable.

Mordecai now has played in less than 4 games this year (I think it has only been one game), he has Riley and his staff working to develop him and surround him with great offensive talent and most importantly, he's very talented.
No knock on Austin, but I give Mordecai an excellent chance of starting, even if Spencer Rattler is around. This spring and August will be one of the most interesting and important times in OU's history over determining the QB depth for the upcoming season.

With Murray playing baseball last spring and all summer, Kendall may have kept the battle close. He did look pretty good in the spring game, granted that was against out defense.

I understand all the comments...and agree to a point. But I do believe it was being a little dishonest. It wasn't like Kendall was going to transfer if he was told he wouldn't be starting. I prefer the straight up approach

I may be wrong but there was always the chance that Murray could have left for baseball at any moment. So Riley needed Austin to continue to prepare as if he was going to be the starter.

Thats a good point. Maybe Riley told Austin just that...who knows.

Ha! Murray split on Aggie. Just saying.

Absolutely not. Think for a minute. Everyday of the pre-season Fall practices Riley was being asked about the QB competition. These sports writers don't care about anything but a story. Riley is trying to build a team. He can't reveal every leader at every position group on his team during the August practices.

So, he keeps it under wraps until he has to make the final decision and then make an announcement. It isn't lying. It is just not answering the stupid question. Riley saying that it is a good or great competition isn't lying. And, that is basically the way he answered that question.

It is really silly to think that Riley is required to reveal who he is going to start at QB on the first or 20th day of Fall practice. He has a job to do and part of that job is to build a team. He has to build depth and doing that requires that all his players get the chance to earn a spot on the depth chart.

I'm positive that Austin Kendall realized his rank in terms of him and Kyler. After all he is there every day and sees what is going on with his fellow QBs. Riley couldn't hide that even if he really tried. So, it had not a thing to do with any of the three QBs.

I could be wrong, but I believe Riley did say something along the lines that it was a really, really close race. Obviously that was not the case. Call it lying, fudging, or just keeping it close to the vest. It doesn't matter. I just put very little stock into what any coach says these days. There is no way that race was close.

I call it gamesmanship.
To coaches, players, fans and opponents it had to be obvious that Murray was on the inside track without question. That's not belittling Austin to say that Murray is simply a much better QB.
Riley is only "guilty" of not tipping his hand.

I really remember when I told people the KM would be just as good as baker if not better people didn't like what I said well... lookie now huh.. where all the crow eaters at?

I said the same thing. I watched him play for 3 years in Allen and he plays the same way now as he did then. Has always been able to both run and pass. People who didn't watch him in HS had no clue he could throw, now they do. So many so called "experts" had no clue what they were talking about cause they didn't see him play in person over 30 times.
