Rattler in

For the record Mordecai looked very good also. However I think we all know that Rattler is the future and I would expect him to be the starter next season. Unfortunately that likely means Tanner transfers out if he doesnt win the job next season.

Is anyone aware that there are no quarterbacks in the 2020 class and that next year, only Rattler and Mordecai will be available ? Might be nice to keep Mordecai around....unless another incoming transfer is lurking.

I am glad Mordecai and Rattler got some field time. Should be an interesting battle next year for the starting job. Rattler appears to be Riley’s favorite to mold into the QB for his intricate system....

It'll be Rattler! Did'nt buy into the AK and Kyler Murray close competition two years ago and did'nt buy into that Jalen Hurts and Mordecai competition this spring/fall as well. Total coach speak to keep the backups competing.

It seems there is no urgency to sign a QB in 2020 since we have Vandagriff coming in 2021. It won't be the first time OU has had a gap year in QBs.

LR won't name a starter until the last minute. It will be too late to transfer by then. Regardless, I'm sure he's thought about way more scenarios than anyone on this board has.
Sure, but my question concerns a numbers game not a question about Riley’s decision making. Again, if Mordecai were to transfer after this season....and with no QB in the 2020 class....Rattler would be the last man standing to play QB. I can’t see Riley letting Mordecai leave just because he can’t be the starter.
There’s also other factors to consider like injuries and transfers.

I doubt that Mordecai would leave after the season, because Riley won't name a starter until game week or possibly the week before next year. Kendall left because they brought in Hurts. Had that not happened, I think he would have stayed and competed for the job. HOWEVER, if Hurts goes down, or Rattler proves to be too good to leave on the bench this year, then we'd be looking at a completely different dynamic. In that case, it wouldn't surprise me if he brought in a JUCO and a 2020 signee. Or another grad transfer.

You're right, though. Going into the season with just two would be rolling the dice, and probably change the offense to a lot less RPO/PRO. I believe he'll add a 3rd in some form or fashion.

Jalen Hurts, for what it’s worth, provided great depth as Alabama’s backup in the SEC championship game. So there’s no sin in being a capable backup quarterback. Most great teams have solid backups at quarterback.
i think it also gives us some idea of the separation going on at the top level of college football today and recently (ie: alabama and clemson) that hurts is our starter but is a non-starter in tuscaloosa. i think he's really really good and yet he can't crack the first 11 somewhere? man that says a lot. same at clemson. dude like kelly bryant bails cuz he sees the old writing on the wall.

He's a placeholder. I'm still a long way from sold on him. Had Rattler opted to enroll in the spring, I doubt that we'd have ever seen Hurts in an OU uniform.

He darn sure wouldn't have been good enough to start at our place the past three seasons.

With Riley around & known as the QB whisperer, I don't think OU will ever have to worry about having great QB play.

Sorry but I lol'ed at that. Hurts was 26-2 as a starter at Bama and won a NC. What has Rattler done? Not a damn thing.
I get that some don't want a Bama reject QB but that is not what Hurts is. He is a very talented FB Player from a School that recruited a better more talented QB to run their type of system and won the starting job. Alabama gets the recruits they want, OU is not on that level yet, maybe one day we will be but comparing Hurts to Rattler based on early enrollment is laughable. Hurts is by far a better player than Rattler could hope to be at this stage. Maybe some of Jalen will rub off on Rattler, I hope it does. Some act like Rattler is the Second Coming yet he has not won a single game as an OU player yet.

Well Rattler certainly passes the eye test. He has a very smooth throwing motion and looks to be very accurate. But then again so was Bomar.

We'll see how good he is as the year progresses. It has nothing to do with him coming from Alabama. He hasn't made a big-league throw, yet. Not one. I can count on one hand the number of times he's thrown it "on time". You certainly don't hear Riley talking about him the way he did about the last two. Maybe he's seeing some of the stuff I am.

Again, we'll see.

I should have been more clear about Hurts.
I was talking about people on social media saying they didn't want him to transfer here and that they wanted Rattler to be the starter. Probably some whorn fans pretending to be OU fans I am betting.
I do remember someone here saying that if Hurts drops a game or two then Rattler should get the job going forward to get ready for next season.
Should that have been the case last year when Kyler lost to texass?
At this point how would anyone know that Rattler could run the offense better than Mordecai?
Anyway, hope we don't have to find out.

Hurts does make me nervous running a lot but so did Kyler and Baker.

Murray did not "lose" to Texas. His offense put up 45 points which should win games every time.
It was OU's defense that cost that game.....and it may cost a game or two this season....even if Hurts wins a Heisman.

I think that was probably me. My thought process goes like this..
1. Hurts is a Senior and Rattler the Freshman.
2. Four out of the five 5 O-line are new starters.
3. Toss in all of the Freshman 5 star WRs...

With a two loss team, they won't make the playoffs, so let them play together, grow & and gain experience w/ one another. BTW... It appears that Hurts runs more than Murray. Maybe not. But it does look like he's quick to tuck it and he runs a lot more. And Murray did a lot of sliding to protect himself.

Offense is not an issue for OU. It hasn't been these past 3-4 years.
For sure, the O-line and kicking game need to develop, but until OU can contain (not necessarily stop) opposing offenses, making or surviving the playoffs will not be possible.
Considering who OU has played after three games, this team is still an unknown commodity, at least until October 12th.

Hurts does run it often, but I haven't gotten the impression it's bad or selfish decision making. In fact, I've had the impression that he runs the read better than almost anyone I've watched. I can't recall a single time he kept the ball and the RB was free and clear with a gaping hole. And, he hasn't handed it off just to have the RB run right into the arms of a defender. He has damn good decision making on the fly.

I also don't think Chip Kelly was trying to make excuses for his beating by saying Hurts was in the group of Murray and Luck as the best QBs he's seen. Chip is fairly long in the tooth. He knows some football.

I said it, too. And I still believe it.

Murray was a lot smaller, if I was him I would have been sliding a lot too. I also think it was the baseball player in him, he has some pretty slides.

My point was Murray lost so goes the team, not a personal loss for Murray. If Hurts loses a game it will be a team loss as well.
We had a lot of close ganes last year that could have gone the other way. Just as last season I would not blame the loss, any loss on any single player and I would not this year either.

I disagree, sometimes it spatters spitters and sputters when we could and should put the foot on the throat and put the game away. We have not had the luxury on leaving it up to the defense to make a key stop and I know I am not comfortable depending on them in the past or present so far to do so.

Personally if OU drops a game or two this year I would suspect it would be because of our D, Inexperinced Receivers, young O line and inexperienced kicker but thats just me.
Hurts is the best chance we have this year to avoid and make up for all that, just my opinion. The other 2 QB's behind him could not carry his jockstrap.
He has done a few things we could not do since 2000, win vs Georgia and win a NC Game. Rattler and Mordecai will get their chance, just not this year hopefully .
