Clearly, Mike Stoops needs to go, but I'm concerned that the OU football program's "DNA" or "culture" is that of having teams that prioritize offense at the expense of defense.....in other words, would Stoops' replacement be someone with a similar mindset ?
Would Riley know what a good defensive-minded coach is all about ?
How high would Riley aim in bringing in a capable defensive coach ?
Are OU's defensive issues solely on the back of one man ?
Shut down defenses are now a rarity. It seems to me that defensive strategies are today more about containment instead of holding opponents to just a few points. I have no problem with that, except that for OU, it is NOT working !
Since 2010, the average OU game score was 41-26.
From 2000-2009 it was 36-18.
So OU is yielding 8 more points per game since 2009....and 2009 was the last season I saw OU play decent defense even with an 8-5 record and a badly decimated team due to injuries.
And just for the record, the average score per game from decade to decade was (if anyone's interested):
From 1990-1999 it was 23-23.
From 1980-1989 it was 34-13.
From 1970-1979 it was 35-14.
From 1960-1969 it was 24-13.
From 1950-1959 it was 36-8.
