Portland Ct.
And will not play in Washington States bowl game.
He’s projected to come to OU. He’s genetically rated the top player in the portal.
Also, OT Luke Baklenko is transferring to OU from Stanford.

I don’t want to go back to the days when professional athletes like Mickey Mantle had one year contracts that had to be renegotiated each year, but long term deals for millions doesn’t work out alot of times. If a coach fails to live up to expectations the school loses. If he exceeds expectations the coach gets a new contract without having to stay with the deal he originally signed. The coach wins either way.

This is the shit we as fans have to put up with now. 3 M and I wonder if its OU or a team like Bama.
If this $3M figure is connected to OU I obviously haven’t yet come to appreciate the financial wealth associated with Sooner sports. $3M for one player without any guarantees whatsoever!! Crazy shit.

I think it’s 1.5 a year 3 mil total for 2 years.

We shouldn’t be paying players at all.
Totally agree but it doesn’t matter what we think. I think many of us have stated NIL would destroy the game we grew up with. It is doing just that but unfortuately the powers that be ( universities) are doing what they have to do to stay relevant in this new age of student athletes no longer applies.

They are now just “Its all about me and my money” semi-pros. It sucks.

Players have been getting paid for decades. When I was very young growing up in a small town in the 70's the star football player on the HS team was given a brand new Trans Am so he and his parents wouldn't move to a bigger town and play there instead. I would imagine they got more than just the car.
Happened a lot more than people think it did. Always been about the money, for the Scools and the Players. Nothing has really changed except is not against the rules anymore and they just call it NIL now.

That is only somewhat true 67. Only select players were getting paid under the table and yes recruiting was a dirty game. Some schools paid the price ( IE: OU) but nobody paid more than SMU did when it came to penalties / infractions placed on a school. It was always a NCAA do they like the school or not thing.

Today its way out of control and not anywhere near as close as the under the table deals that took place in the 60’s up.

Bottom line is todays players think they all should be getting paid to play.

I played football with the Oklahoma Player of the Year for 1964. Jay O’Neal and other Sooner coaches were frequent visitors at our practices. The kid was a great guy from a dirt poor family. That never seem to bother him. During our senior year we all noticed him coming to school wearing new jeans and shirts. So yeah he definitely benefited. Was it OU or OSU…..or both? We never discussed it and he never changed. We loss one game. The Class A state championship on Owen Field. He committed to OU soon after. That’s the way it was back then but what we have now is crazy, IMO. Even the SMU deal couldn’t compare with what is now legal. Ultimately this crap will ruin what most of us love about college sports.

It really has ruined a lot for me already. I now find it hard to get behind these kids 100% when I know the very next season they may bolt to one of our rivals for more money. Some of them transfer every single year. There aren't many Danny Stutsmans out there anymore and its a shame.

Most of you know that I was a manager for the OU football team for four years, 69 to 73. I lived in the basement of Washington house most of that time. Besides my '65 Mercury Comet, there were two other cars in the parking lot that weren't the latest model of some top of the line car. All the football and basketball players lived in Wash House. But both dorms parked in the parking lot north our dorm, including wrestlers, tennis players, baseball players and swimmers. So all athletes had something really nice to drive. I'd suspect that virtually every school in at least D1 in the country had similar parking situations.

And unlike today, back then, if a guy wasn't married, he lived in the dorm until his senior year. Also unlike today, there was zero women's scholarships for athletics.

I think a lot of peoples idea of NIL is that all the players are getting paid big money but thats just not true. Only a select few are getting the big bucks. Here is an article from August of this year that breaks it down.

Maybe all players back in the day were not getting a new car or wads of cash but a lot of players benefitted from playing, passing grades is one of them, pocket money is another. In some cases and I saw it first hand where a player would stay back a year so they could play 1 more yr of high school ball. Not sure if it was the Coaches asking them to do it or if it was just a decision the player made on his own. It got so bad that they had to put a stop to it because it was getting out of control.

At the end of the day we all have to like the NIL or lump it because its not going away. I think fans of teams that are doing well with it like it a lot, those that aren't don't like it at all.
Personally I have no ptoblem with players getting paid, these Schools and Head Coaches have been making millions off of them for a long time, they just want a slice of the pie. Now the Portal thing is another animal entirely. Way above my pay grade on how to fix that mess.

I respect your opinion but I do disagree on these players should be cashing in and getting a piece of the pie per say. Remember they have full scholarships paying them for going to college while real students are struggling to make those payments for attending school.

Its not cheap to go to college but the majority of athletes are not out one dime because of those full rides. If that isn’t getting a piece of the pie I am not sure what that would be considered. Many, especially the future NFL bound players could give a care about the degree.

I am not against them getting a little extra but what they are after now is just greed. Easy money and they get paid even when they play like crap and they know it. The portal has done nothing but create an open free agency. This isnt what CFB is suppose to be about.

Just my opinion though.

I am all for doing away with Scholarships. They wanna be paid then they should pay for their own education, meals books etc instead of buying Bling and Fancy Vehicles.
