We lost. I'm still emotionally in shock because our offense did everything they could to put us in position to win and we came up short defensively when we needed one more stop.
I'm conflicted because our guys made a huge comeback, but we have huge issues that need to be fixed. I will never for the life of me believe in playing off and soft on the game deciding drive. I just dont getit. Ellingher was losing confidence throwing the ball and the pressure was squarely on ut.
In the end we lost and our Achilles heal (defense getting a stop when we need it) was on full display again.
Anywho...here are my thoughts:
1. I feel so sorry for our dbs. They have to think so much they never get to have aggression and play the percentages. Play hard inside, take away the slant and expect the fade....and ACTUALLY turn your head around. Mix it up with bailing late open up inside and get your head around...we dont do either. We rarely disguise. We allow the offense to dictate what they wanna do.
2. We suck at tackling...terribly. I hate our technique, especially our backers. I've never seen middle line backers wait and grab QBs as they pass by. We dont form tackle ever...sigh
3. Watch the dline very closely. They are being coached to cancel gaps and then sit and react. It's the primary reason we dont get pressure on qb's. Again, I dont understand it...I dont get why we dont press the pocket from the inside. Idk man.
4. I love our wrs. They play the game the correct way. Both of them our extremely special.
5. Kyler Murray is special man. That 76 yarder would have him in Sooner lore if our defense could stop someone. As much as his fumble hurt us...it sucks that we have to be perfect on offense. Kid played his heart out, but his two turn overs were huge momentum shifts.
Final thought:
This one hurts the heart. We have systematic problems that have transcended seasons and players. We live and all work in a capitalistic society where you make your worth. I am not in meetings, at practice nor do I plan with the coaches but a common thread in the long term demise of our program his been our inept defense. We are not fast or aggressive, or physical or intimidating. We've recruited multiple players...classes of players and the results have remained the same. We've had all time great offenses and put up 50 against the very best programs only to lose because we give up 51.
It's time for a change on defense. Time for a new leader, scheme, and direction. I gotta tell the truth and do what's BEST for the program. In my humble that means bringing in a new defensive coordinator..and firing Mike Stoops.
