Who would you prefer ?
*This is if only one was on the roster.
My personal choice would be Murray. His combination of running and passing is the best I've seen at the college level. I don't believe I will ever see a QB with Murray's overall skills and athleticism again.
Both, IMO, are the two best quarterbacks in Oklahoma history whose national championship efforts were wasted by their teams' weak defenses.

Jimmy Harris...Don't call me out, CT...I Understand Your Question...Hope You Understand My Answer! ;)

I DID feel some Disloyalty to Jimmy, when my feelings for Baker started crowding my long-time Dedication to #15...Baker is my CLOSE Second Choice...(I've had to block out the fact that All 3 Are/Were Texans!)

I understand completely.
Jimmy Harris never lost a game and played both ways (and returned punts and kickoffs) in that era. His OU teams of 1954, 1955 and 1956 were 3 of OU's greatest.
I don't generally compare athletes in any sport between now and 50-plus years ago or longer because of the increased size, speed and overall superiority of today's athletes...and taking into account the emergence of black athletes during the 1950's and 1960's.
Harris, or any OU player having Texas roots mean nothing to me....other than that OU's core recruiting is done in the state of Texas....as I believe a player from any state should be able to go to any team, any where. That's against what most UT fans feel.

I think you have to rank them by era; i.e., split-T, I formation, Wishbone, & spread. The I is the easiest...The Worm. The other 3 are really tough. I'd rank Crowder over Harris. I'd rank Mildren over Davis or Holieway. I'd rank Murray over Mayfield & Bradford.

One thing Murray and Mayfield had to deal with, that Jimmy Harris did not, was facing much stronger schedules.
The winning percentage of OU opponents from 1954-56 were 38%...and only 7 opponents during that three season time had winning records.
This is not to diminish Jimmy Harris and what he and his teammates did. It's just the way it was.

Incredibly tough call, but Baker has the slight edge since he led the team for three seasons to Kyler's one. I think Baker was the slightly better passer and his ability to dodge pressure in the pocket was uncanny, but Kyler's quickness and elusiveness made him a more effective runner. Baker by the thinnest of margins.

It's insanely close, but I'd take Baker. He is the better passer, is more athletic than most QBs, and was a fiery leader that could ignite all those around him.

Good post that covers my thoughts as well. Baker has some of the game's intangibles such as leadership that gives him the edge.

Baker...........he just has that extra IT factor.
Baker did have an edge as far as an "it" factor goes.....actually both had it, but Mayfield had been around longer and he perhaps had more of "it".
I wonder if we will ever see the likes of these two again, which is not to say there will be more great QB's at OU. Mayfield and Murray were "Mount Rushmore" talents.

I hope that we’re all asking this question again at the end of the season with the inclusion of Hurts. That would be sweet. Baker gets my vote by a hair.
Hurts + Riley may equal something better than Mayfield or Murray. There's a reason his teammates have been raving about him, and it isn't to inflate an already very accomplished quarterback.

My cousin in Alabama sent me a very nice message touting Hurts. She claims OU fans will love him. “He’s a great young man and an outstanding quarterback”.

Yep Hurts has yet to show what he and Riley will do and I hope its great things. Will have no problem changing my answer if we get over the hump this year but again the defense will be a concern, hopefully we are surprised on both sides of the ball.
