OU's 1st game in 2018 is vs. 11-3 Florida Atlantic. Their successful QB retiring from football

He most likely would have lost the job to one of the two guys transferring in. One is from Florida State and the other from OU. Those two transfers may have played into his decision to "retire". The other item of note regarding the Owls is that they have a new offensive coordinator, Charlie Weiss Jr. At the ripe old age of 24, he's the youngest coordinator in the country. On 2nd thought, maybe that's why the young man retired.

Driskel was instrumental in FAU's success last year (11-3 and a 50-3 win over Akron in their bowl game) and is on track to be the starter next fall, but chooses to leave. Maybe the kid is smart enough to realize his potential and limitations as a football player and is mature enough to know that if he concentrates on his studies, he'll be more successful in business and in life.

I wish him the best and hope he does not regret his decision. Wouldn't surprise me if he shows up on a FCS roster in the fall.

What you say is mostly true, but not sure he was "on track" to be the starter next fall.

From the Sun Sentinel

Despite a strong junior season, he was expected to compete with De’Andre Johnson and Oklahoma transfer Chris Robison for the starting spot in the spring. Johnson was sidelined most of last season because of blood clots while Robison sat out per NCAA transfer rules.

Shortly after the bowl victory, FAU coach Lane Kiffin said he would hold an open competition. That led to backup quarterback Daniel Parr, who began last season as the starter, transferring to Duquesne.

Coachspeak.

He is graduating in May. He doesn’t have a desire to play pro ball. Why not begin your life with your diploma in hand unless you still have live a home with the folks. If so, I’d reconsider.
