When I think of 2000, I remember names like Ryan Fisher, Roger Steffen, Ontei Jones, Brandon Moore, Barry Holleyman, and Corey Callens who may not have been the stars of the team, but among whom we found some senior leadership that carried the team when Heupel was injured.
When I think of 1985, there were so many freshmen and sophomores that made major contributions, and the leadership of some upperclassmen like Jeff Tupper and Travis Simpson come to mind, as well as some effective punting by Mike Winchester.
We had so many superstars in 1974 and 75 that it is obvious that we should have won. But, we had a few who weren't supposed to be quite that good, like Jimbo Elrod who was probably better known as a highschool wrestler. Yet, he was so effective beside LeRoy. With all of the talent we had in the defensive line, a key figure was Glen Comeaux who could do it all, just not as well as a Selmon. Would we have won in 75 without a second string fullback, Jimmy Culbreath, who broke Michigan's back in the Sugar Bowl with a nine-yard run on 3rd and 8 on about their twenty? Does anyone even remember Terry Webb, probably our best offensive lineman not named Roberts. I've never met anyone who remembers that Lucious' first replacement was an undersized NG out of Lake Charles, George Walrond.
I loved Tommy and Jerry. But, my favorites included the guy who blocked for Tommy and Clendon, Billy Pricer, who had a few years with the Colts, again because he could block. I don't know how many times I heard the names John Bell or Ed Gray on defense, and I'm not sure that the people that he hit can remember Bell.
The point is that these were often the players who had the character that won a title for us. They may not have had the pure talent of a Sims, Pruitt, or Selmon. But, they won games for us, and they kept the team focused. Champions go forward without getting sidetracked. You can't lose to a Texas every year and even be considered. The leaders may have been those whose names we have forgotten. But, they made it happen.
This year, Baker stands out as a leader, as does Sterling.
