Beating them wasn't a fluke. Beating them by 23 was a fluke. Those guys defended Kansas in a way we could only hope to. There were a much tougher matchup for Kansas than OU is. But I think we're a tougher matchup for them than Kansas is.
They surprised Kansas by not relying on the three, but instead, pounding them inside. And Ellis got a tough foul call in the first 90 seconds and it took away all his aggressiveness. It wasn't a bad call. But he got banged on a lot in the game and he hardly ever saw a foul called. Kansas is better in a game where they get to the line a good bit. OU seems to play better when they don't call much.
I think in Hawaii, OU just dealt better with jet lag than Nova did. But there is a real positive change in OU too. Lon has coached differently in the tournament. The biggest difference has involved the rest he's giving a couple of guys. Cousins is getting a full tv break to tv break rest in the first half and a five minute rest in the second.
Lon needs Isaiah full speed at the end. Today, even though it might have been a bit early, he put Woodard back in the game with three fouls to give Cousins his full second half rest. He has started resting Lattin in the first ten minutes of the first half, whether or not he's in foul trouble. They'd been playing so much without him anyway. Sitting him after the first tv timeout. If he gets there without a foul, then he gets to sit and see how the game is being played. He still gets fouls where he may not be making much contact, but there tend to be when he does something that usually draws a call. It's time for him to learn what those things are, and back off from getting the customary call that goes against him.
Jumani played his best game today. It was the first time I saw him aggressive and just playing, instead of standing around. He had a block. He made a terrific play on a save attempt. He's playing a little stronger. He's made himself into a valuable contributor for six or seven minutes.
And James, while not great (yet) has become a quality sixth or seventh man. We don't lose as much when Woodard has to sit for whatever reason. James contribution means Jordan only plays 31 or 32 minutes and he's a lot better player with that structure. He played really well in the Regional, although the foul problems hurt him today.
All this to say that I know that Nova is a lot better team that showed up and shot under 15% from three when we played them. Those December Hawaii games don't get much game planning. The national semifinal is more game planned than the final, because you have a week to get ready. We'll have a harder time getting open looks. But OU is a lot better too. Nova has a true college center. A really tall guy with hops and width to his body.
And one other curiosity against Nova, who usually makes a lot of three's. The semifinals in a dome can be a tough adjustment for some distance shooters. Whoever best adjusts to that will have a great chance. So whoever has the best inside game might fare better. When OU shoots like we did in the first half against Oregon, it covers up some defensive deficiencies. Hard to have much transition offense when you're taking the ball out of the basket.
And one other thing. I think the most underrated, least talked about phase of OU's game that has been a huge factor in the success through four games is the way Lon has had a different, specific design against each press we've faced in the tournament. We've had a few turnovers, but nothing like those pressing teams have generated against others they'd faced. 3/4 pressure is a big part of Nova's game. And occasionally turning the pressure up.
OU has hurt full court and shorter court pressure for open looks. When Buddy is on, that pressure gives him so much space, and he cannot be guarded by one guy. Cousins has been great, and has really been the key to OU's offense in the post season. When he got an early third foul against VCU, that's when they cut the lead from comfortable to single digits, to taking a lead. Buddy doesn't get his shots in rhythm much much Cousins is having to sit.
Cousins staying out of foul trouble is a huge key against Nova.
