OU Girls...One, and Done...

The seniors on the women's team are graduating without a single win in the NCAA tournament, yet they've had four chances. Sherri's making big bank on a poor product.

2018 - First Round Loss - Seed 10
2017 - First Round Loss - Seed 14
2016 - First Round Loss - Seed 14
2015 - Second Round Loss - Seed 5 (lost to Seed 4)

I wonder what the Cinderella comparison is from women's to men's. Just by guess, I don't think there are nearly as many women cinderellas, so the seniors have performed as expected in every tournament I suppose.

Not arguing for their performances though. We've sucked.

With the women, I think the issue is the seedings they are getting. They have been a double-digit seed the last three years.
I guarantee you are right about the Cinderellas in the women's tourney versus the men's.
But you need to be a 3-5 seed to be successful in the tourney.
I don't think anyone is upset about a 10 or 14 seed losing in the first round.
What we're upset about is being a 10 or 14 seed to begin with.

It seems in most women's sports, the teams are separated significantly more by talent. In men's sports, every team has so much talent that the separation is more about teamwork and chemistry.
Perhaps in most women's sports, as you said, but one women's team that truly combines teamwork and chemistry....and in Pat Summit's own words, "never lets up" or "never is satisfied with what you've done"....along with having great players....and that's the UConn women's team.

But, I think that is exactly what Jcon is talking about. You're right about the UC women never let up or never satisfied. But, they have all the top talent, also.

Except for last year when they had only a six player rotation and no depth behind it. It caught up to them vs Mississippi State. They were worn out.

Upsets will happen, it's just not as common as in men's sports.

Women's soccer is the greatest example of this. Everyone makes excuses for US Men's Soccer sucking, because Americans "don't care" about soccer. Yet, the US Women's Soccer team has medaled in every World Cup and won 3/7 of them. They've won 4/6 Olympics and medaled in 5/6. So why is a blanket excuse for one sex not applicable for the other?

Do Americans not field great athletes in soccer? Of course they do, but there is a fundamental lack in strategy and understanding the game.

With the women, it doesn't matter. We just field the best athletes on a regular basis. Who cares about strategy?

Now fOSU has surpassed us. Do Joe C and our fans think that is acceptable? I think it is going to be very difficult for us to overtake them. We are missing an entire recruiting class from two years ago. We brought in two and they both transferred. That would be very hard to overcome by a good recruiter and Sherri is not a good recruiter. Not in recent years anyway.

It could be argued that Sherri Coale was very lucky early in her career.

There was this unknown Canadian named Stacey Dales that was pretty much unrecruited. She was going to attend Syracuse, because it was only 2 hours from home. The Syracuse coach hadn't even seen her play.

It was OU assistant Pam DeCosta that found Stacey by accident when traveling to watch a different player. Pam was essentially Stacey's recruiter.

That brought OU up which snowballed into the Paris twins. The Paris twins intentionally did not want to play for a powerhouse. They wanted an up-and-coming program that they could be part of the building process. OU was in perfect position for that at the time because of Stacey Dales.

Then Danielle Robinson went to OU strictly because she knew the Paris twins and respected their opinions.

JCon....speaking of the Paris twins, over their time at OU, I did not see either of them becoming better than they were their freshman year. Do you agree ?
Coaches like Auriemma and McGraw recruit good players and make them better....and take great players and make them legends.

I totally agree as well. The Paris twins were awesome players for OU and great ambassadors for the university during their time and still well beyond. However, I remember thinking the day that they signed that we were looking at 3-4 straight national titles. I don't think we ever advanced past the Final 4 with them. I would say our teams during their tenures was a disappointment. We had 2 of the Top 10 recruits in the nation with those two. We should have had an unstoppable front court.

Heck, even Courtney admitted her career was a disappointment at OU and offered to repay her scholarship ($64k).

Obviously, I would prefer that OU had a women's basketball team like UConn, but that's not happening.
The stagnation of Coale's program makes me appreciate what UConn's Coach Auriemma and his assistant coach Chris Daley have done since 1995 even more. I've seen virtually every game that Auriemma's teams have played since 1995 and when I compare Coale's teams to Auriemma's it's like comparing a college team to a high school team. Coale's teams seem to be be playing in slow motion as I compare the two teams.....or when I even compare her teams to those of Baylor, South Carolina and Notre Dame.
I like Sherri, especially since she hails from Healdton, my mother's home town, but the women's BB program isn't going any higher at OU and maybe it's not that big an issue among OU fans. Because of that, I think Sherri will remain at OU for as long as SHE wants.
OU is and always will be a football school.
While it's great having championships in other sports, football is the main attraction at OU.

I get that, CT, but she's paid an awful lot of money for fans to just "get what they get". She shouldn't make one dime more than the lowest paid assistant football coach.

Here are the 2017 fiscal year numbers. She makes $1.3 million a year. By comparison, Patti Gasso makes a little over a half million. She's making 3 times Cale Gundy's salary. She was making more than Lincoln Riley prior to him being named head coach, and she makes about the same as Castiglione.

Obscene.

Ouch !
I guess Serena Williams has no complaints about this.

One doesn't have to compare OU with UCONN. It is enough to compare our sad declining program with fOSU. They have surpassed us and it is not going to be easy to catch them.

I am a fan of the Sooner basketball women and it saddens me greatly to see the pukes pass us by.

OU never had a women’s coach that gave a crap until Sherri. Just saying. Not sure OU will find anyone better or can become as much a Sooner. It ain’t the end of the world. I still believe things will get better....but I don’t expect as much as others. Think Football, Women’s Softball and Gymnastics for both genders. That’s all we will likely ever be except for the ocassional freak seasons. Wishing for anything else is like Kansas dreaming of becoming elite in the sports we already are and have been.

Good points, but think of how nice it would be if the women's basketball program at OU could reach a level of other women's teams like Notre Dame, Stanford, Baylor, Louisville, Texas, Texas A&M, Duke, Oregon or South Carolina ? Under the right direction, that's not a farfetched scenario.
Forget UConn....that's another story.
