OU - Baylor

Baylor's defense is pathetic. They, however, win on offense because the opponent's DB's play so far off their receivers. This allows for Briles' bread and butter. Throw short to eventually bring in the DB's and then go over the top. If the DB's continue to play soft and away, Art will exploit it underneath all game long and methodically score slowly but often. He has made a decent living off both Stoops by doing this.

Baylor plays easy opponents until the season's end. By then, Briles' system has put up enormous video game stats. This puts his system clearly into the heads of Bob and Mike and we play tentatively against them (in the hopes of slowing them down) rather than aggressively. Briles salivates at this approach to his team. He definitely is no dummy. Look at how he easily replaces his injured starting QB (Russel) with spare parts (Stidham). It's not the Baylor superior player talent (his annual recruiting classes rank in the upper 40's nationally - we, in contrast, rank around the Top 15). Rather, it's the Baylor "system" and the psychological warfare Briles employs against his opponents especially Bob and Mike. You have to launch a full scale attack against Briles because that is exactly what he is bringing every game.

Even if our defense plays a very solid game, conservative Bob won't press it offensively against Briles. Bob is so predictable in directing his game planning against Briles and Art knows it. Would absolutely shock me if Bob plays aggressively on both sides of the ball against Baylor. More likely, he will remain conservative on offense with the hope that our defense will turn the tide.

If we take it aggressively to Baylor both on offense and defense, we can and probably will win. But that would take Bob out of his recent 3-4 year comfort zone against the Bears.

Here’s the deal with Baylor IMO…..

They are not a very good 4th quarter team against a very smart determined opponent who plays with talent and will fight them for all 4 quarters… Baylor can be worn down by physical play! They play with too many track like players who are trying to play football.

Baylor has not seen a defense close to what OU has or a team with the offensive balance of OU.

Not sure I would call the best HS QB prospect in the nation a year ago "spare parts".
But other than that, if KSU can hold Baylor to 31 points, OU should take a lesson and be able to at least mirror that output.
IF OU holds Baylor to 31 Pts, I really like our chances.

K-State's offense had a large part in holding Baylor to 31 points.

I hope this team approaches the remainder of the games as a uniquely its own 'four game season'.

Forget about what's transpired thus far.
Take it to our foes a play, a quarter, half, a game at a time. I'm pretty sure this is a tried and true theme the coaching staff is preaching to them.

Let's see how it plays out.
Our week to week improvement quotient has been glaringly obvious.

Got to like it!

Briles could take OUr talent and achieve a National Championship title. So can Bob but, IMHO, it won't happen.

Sure, we have some salty players. Always have and likely always will. But, we just don't seem to get the mileage from them that a Briles or a Patterson likely could. They're already getting better results with less. I believe even Snyder could win the NC title with our talent.

Baylor will be scary good in a couple years when their recruiting classes become elite.

What's interesting is my son-in-law is a Baylor grad and he and his buddies already consider Briles as having at least an equal legacy as Bob's. IMHO, that's being a wee bit foolish in the present but admittedly Briles has done phenomenally well in his rather short tenure with the Bears and his record of achievements will grow exponentially.

Let's just hope, Briles don't put a bounty out on Mayfield.

I was sitting in my season tickets for that Miami game when Troy was injured and nothing I saw nor anything ever reported since ever alluded to the idea that the injury was intentional. The only OU game I have personally attended that seemed to indicate a purposeful injury was the OU vs ND game in 1966. The 1966 Irish were arguably the best college team of all time. OU was in the process of turning things around under Jim McKenzie's staff. While we were undefeated and ranked #10 we had no business being on the field with this great ND squad......except for the presence of the "Chocolate Cheetah", Granville Liggins. For the entire first qtr. Liggins singlehandedly stuffed the Irish so in the 2nd qtr. ND set up a trap block and they took Liggins out. There was no question that it was intentional. No need for replay which obviously didn't exist then. The final score was 38-0 but had Granny been able to play the whole game, the final would have no doubt been an Irish victory but the margin would have been much smaller.

Well, I said that bit about Aikman based on some pretty solid documentation.
When the custodial crew was cleaning up the Miami locker room, they found a hastily hand written note of 'Game Objectives'.
They had all the usual, no turnovers, don't get in third and long, no penalties and all...then one of the last things on the list was something to the effect, 'Take Aikman out'.
Of course, it worked its way to Switzer.
Perhaps it was tongue in cheek. Who knows.
Maybe urban legend.

I disagree with your evaluation of their defense. They have two DL's that will be taken in the top three rounds, maybe high. They are sound at linebacker.

When SMU ran up and down the field on them in the first half, Baylor was missing one or two and holding out one or two. I keep hearing about how bad they were against KState, but they only gave up 17 and got more than one turnover. I promise you, that they will show more enthusiasm against OU than they did against KState. And they'll have the home crowd.

Baylor hasn't really been tested. But they'll be a favorite next Saturday, and will deserve to be. I won't be surprised if they lose at couple or more in the remainder of the season. I'll be less surprised if they run the table.

They are absolutely beatable. But it's not like that the two games against them have been close. OU has a lot of making up the difference to accomplish. I think we can. But I don't think Baylor's defense is in the neighborhood called horrible.

Will start worrying about Baylor tomorrow night after the Iowa St. game.

Yep, excellent point. One game at a time. I would be surprised if OU did not win this game but there is no doubt that Iowa St has improved it's program the past few years.

You're right. Just like Oakman did to Trevor last year. Oakman is the dirtiest player in college football, IMO.

The Big 12 office has to have seen the slug to the mouth last night. I can't believe Baylor hasn't been warned and the ref's will be watching him in the future. I say that, but they should have already been watching him.......

Liggins was the first great OU nose guard. Maybe the best ever. He is my favorite.

The kid looked pretty amazing actually. It's just one game though. He's got to string a couple like that together before I get too worried.

Still, based on that one performance, I have to think our chances of winning in Waco are less than I hoped they'd be after Russell went down.

Well, his first game was against a bad KSU team. I think it is exactly what OU would want. Get some game film to see his tendencies, but not enough game time for him to get in a groove. I think wwe can blitz him and rush him early. Then hopefully, he starts to question his ability to stay upright and rush his passes.
