The University of Oklahoma baseball team placed fourth in the Big 12 Coaches Preseason Poll as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning. The Sooners received 45 points on their way to their highest position since being the league’s preseason favorite in 2013.
Last season, Oklahoma went 34-27 overall and finished third in the Big 12 with a 13-11 conference record, including series wins at Texas, Kansas State and West Virginia as well as home series wins over Texas Tech and Kansas.
TCU, Oklahoma State and Texas all received three first-place votes with the Horned Frogs coming out on top with 57 points. The Cowboys landed in second at 55 and the Longhorns in third with 53. It marks the first time in Big 12 history that three teams have garnered multiple first-place votes.
OU was picked seven points ahead of fifth-ranked Texas Tech (38). The bottom half of the poll is rounded out by West Virginia (26), Kansas (18) and Kansas State (18) in a tie for seventh and Baylor (14).
The Sooners were last picked fourth in the preseason poll in 2010; a year in which Oklahoma finished second in the standings and earned its 10th trip to the College World Series. OU has been picked fifth or better in each poll beginning in 2010 and finished fourth or better in five of those six seasons.
The season gets underway on Friday, February 19 against Northeastern. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm. The Sooners host the Huskies for four games on the weekend, including a Saturday doubleheader.
