I was a defensive coordinator for a long time and ran the 50 defense. I will say that the wishbone was absolutely the hardest offense for us to defend. If they come out balanced either double tight or double split with 2 slots it really forces you to go cover 2 or 4, to be balanced with them. Where it really gets tough is if they run flash motion. You really need to role out of 2 or 4 into cover 3 and declare a strength and it happens quickly. On the flash motion the back has momentum so when the secondary roles, whoever is rolling up for pitch has to make sure and not get leveraged and let the motion back seal him. Another aspect that makes it tough, is those sorry b*st(*ds cut the crap out of you. By halftime you ends and linebackers are hobbling from getting cut. The wishbone is a beautiful offense to watch but man it does suck to defend. We were playing Edison one time and they ran the veer, first play of the game they run outside veer 84 yards later it was pay dirt for them. When the end came over I was like what the hell were you doing you seen this a 1000 times this week. He looked at me and said I didn't see that. Any of the option teams the speed of the game is what you can't simulate in practice. My end had seen the concept a 1000 times but not at that speed. It just sucks defending the wishbone in a 50 that is why when the 4-3 (Miami) a lot of people got away from the wishbone. The 4-3 forces a midline read which is a lot harder because of how quick the read is.
