For you old-school rockers, Paul Kantner, founder and guitarist of the 60's psychedelic band Jefferson Airplane, has passed away at the age of 74. According to his wife, Kantner died on Thursday of organ failure and septic shock. He had been admitted to a San Francisco hospital after falling ill earlier in the week.

I was about 14 or 15 when I first heard their music and liked what I heard, but it wasn't until I was older before I really started getting into their music. They were easily one of the most influential bands of the late 60s and along with the Grateful Dead, they were the driving force of the "Summer of Love" sound of that time. I really enjoyed their music until the late 70s when they changed their lineup (slightly), their name (Jefferson Starship, which later become just "Starship") and their musical direction. It was at this time that I lost interest, especially after the ridiculous rock anthem - "We Built This City (on Rock & Roll)." Just a horrible song, which I read was the death knell for Kantner and he quit the band shortly after releasing this abomination.

RIP Paul. Thanks for the great music and the memories!

Not a great month to be an aging rock star.

I suspect we'll continue to hear about many great musicians, authors, actors passing. It's the sign of the times. Speaking of time, Father time continues to look around and selecting his favorites.
