Larry passed yesterday. Cancer doesn't play favorites. By the worlds definition, he wasn't a spectacular kid or man. He graduated from HS (1961) , didn't go to college and lived his whole life right their in our hometown. He drove a truck for 30 years then operated a tire shop until he retired. Nope, nothing special about ol Larry
But Larry was special to his friends. He married his HS sweetie and was still married to her the day he died. He was blue collar , but he was a man of his word, paid his bills, and didn't think the world owed him anything. Larry thought he was hell on wheels at fishing and hog hunting. He was always boisterous , enjoyed his beer and smokes (to many smokes) and on more than one occasion, I told him he was full of shit. Yep, he got his full measure of life and never felt that he'd been short changed.
In 1961, we thought that we'd all live forever, live lives full of adventure, travel, enjoy great wealth, and never grow old. But then life entered the picture and we all got a reality check.. Nope, Larry wasn't special, but I'll miss him. All right Larry, tonight I'll pray for your soul and ask for peace and Grace for your loved ones. Then I'll pop the cap on a cold one and drink a salute to your memory. From one ol bastard to another ol bastard.
