So I received what is called a "spousal referral" to a sleep specialist - which is a nice way of saying my wife threatened my life if I didn't do something about my snoring (I pictured her smothering me with a pillow, Cal Naughton, Jr.-style). I work in the healthcare industry, so it was easy to get hooked up. Did a sleep study, got diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea, and got fitted for a CPAP last night.
Other than looking like Bane minus the physique, it wasn't too bad. A bit constrictive but not the end of the world. I woke up a few times during the night futzing with the mask. When I awoke this morning, however, I felt 15 years younger. It's the best nights sleep I've had in decades and I'm amazed at my improved mental acuity even after just one night. Evidently systematically starving your brain of oxygen over the period of several years can have a detrimental effect.
In summary, if you snore like a freight train go get a study done. Aside from the tendency of sleep apnea sufferers to drop dead of stroke or heart attack, the immediate improvement to your quality of life is nothing short of amazing. And you get to look like a much flabbier version of Bane when you go to bed.
