This Christmas Eve took off in spectacular fashion (just like all the others in my growing years). It's significant that I point out that all my grandkids were in the 5 to 10 year range and were still hard corp believers in Santa. I'll explain why a little later in the story. Anyway, the day really starts taking off about 1 pm. Dar is going nuts trying to get and be ready for the family invasion starting about 5. As a result, you might consider me and my ass as collateral damage as she is taking no prisoners in her zeal for every thing to be perfect. Fortunately it all gets finished and done before the arrivals and she's a happy gal.
Five oclock rolls around and it's like someone opened a gate. The front door swings open and I'm facing a stampede of little farts. Suddenly our quiet peaceful home turns into a house of high energy and chaos.. I stand there in marvel, taking it all in. So I suddenly give a loud bellow and announce, "all you little knot heads better front and center and give me some hugs or there'll be no presents for any of you.? Obviously here they come, squealing and shrieking and just about take me to the floor. They love scuffling with their PaPa.
Well we mill around awhile hugging each other and talking about who knows what. Just enjoying each others company. We gravitate to the living room and announce present opening time. LOL, chaos erupts again. As is my want, I find an out of the way place in the room so that I can see all these wonderful faces that are filled with wonderment and happiness. The rest of the evening was filled gifts and feasting. Now here is where the story , that I want to tell you, starts.
The kids believe in Santa because Santa visits their homes and brings gifts, and they hear him and sneak down thw stairs and actually see him. Seeing is believing...right?
When my first grand child was born, soon after, Dar and I went out and bought a Santa suit for me. I was already planning for the little turds. Anyway about 10;30 (by prearrangement) the families all load up and head for home. After all, Santa will arrive sometime in the evening.. After the last one leaves, Dar and I head for our closet where she'll help me get on the costume. and away we go. Our first visit was to our daughters house (up on the East edge of Owasso). As we approach her home, we turn off the lights and park close to the house. I've got big loud sleigh bells attached to my wrist. So as I get close to the house, I start ringing those bells and raising hell and shouting ho ho ho's. They can clearly hear me inside. I walk thru the door, with a bag over my shoulder, still hohohoing. Here I;m careful. I allow them to see only my profile or back (never front) and I quit talking. I don't want the little beggers to recognize me. So I empty the gifts and manage to sneak peeks at them. Fellas, I can't even begin to describe the speechless wonderment and amazement on their little faces. So I finish up and head back to the truck.
We head back to 169 to go to next stop in south Tulsa. I notice that I'm needing gas so I tell Dar to stop at the QT at 76th and 169. So we get there and pull up to the pump. It's very cold with a north wind so I tell Dar I'll get it. I get out and cars almost immediately start slowing. After all it's not everyday that you see Santa pumping gas. Then they begin to stop. First thing I know 2 young women in party dresses, walk up and ask to take a picture with me. Naturally I would. Then a small crowd started to gather around me, all wanting pictures. It was large cross section of people, elderly, families, a few happy drunks, dates, you name it.
But while all of this was going on, I noticed a 30 year old car parked about 40 feet away with a young fella patiently standing by his door. I gave a wave to him and he looked at me with a gentle smile on his face, I turned back to my mob of admirers and continued taking pictures and having fun with this nice crowd. After a few more minutes, I glanced back at the old car and he was still there with this nice smile on his face.
I turned back to my admirers and suddenly I just froze in my steps. I asked my self, what just happened, what did I just see? When I had glanced at the young guy, his face and eyes didn't look so young. It was a face of the ages with ancient eyes that knew all things. I immediately turned back around to look, but I saw the face of the pleasant young guy. But I couldn't shake it. Here it is late Christmas Eve approaching Christmas day and I saw what I saw. I'm one of those that believe that there are events and happening in the world that defy my understanding. I know that there are many who think they grasp the entire knowledge of the world. I quickly told the rest of the gathering that I needed to get to my grandkids homes and hugged a few more and they dispersed.
I turned and started walking towards the old car. As I approached him, he still had the gentle smile on his face. I also noticed that his old car was clean and well maintained. I walk up to him and say Merry Christmas and looks at me and says Merry Christmas Santa. He then asks, "would you please hold my baby and let me take a picture?" Absolutely, I say. He bends over and speaks to his wife and she gets out and walks around to us. She's lovely and the baby (about 6 mo) is wrapped in blankets, making soft sounds.
I'm still slightly shaken by my earlier experience, and here standing before me is a young couple holding an infant, driving an old car, dressed in old but neat and clean clothing and both of them are standing there, smiling at me. There was no nervousness or being ill at ease. They ere completely calm and relaxed. So take the baby, cradle him in my arms and his striking blue eyes are gazing into my face. Pictures were taken and I told the father that I wanted to buy the bay a gift, if it was ok with him. He gave me permission. I gave him all the cash I had (5 - $20') and hugged both of them and said goodbye. I stood there, watching them, as they drove off. Just as he was pulling on the street, he turned and looked at me. My mouth dropped open, did I see that face agin?
Fellas, that's how it was. I have no explanations. Thoughts like Christmas miricles, Holy births, visiting Angels< I don't know. But l'll cherish that night the rest of my life. Dar and I went ahead and finished the rest of our visits and went home.
That's it fellas, I hope it gives you happiness and Joy on this wonderful Christmas 2015
