Where'd they go? Not to OU? Maybe it is not, nor has it ever been, where most of OU's players come from... Why? Because Texas has a LOT more D-1 talent... The idea that the quality of football in Oklahoma High schools has dropped off is a myth...

2004 Oklahoma HS football produced 9 three star or better players... OU signed 2...

2005? 17 three star or better players... OU signed 4...

2006? 20 three star or better players... OU signed 8...

These guys played for a national championship in 2008...

These guys lost to Baylor, aTm, etc...

Yeah, but you have to go a level or two deeper than just the list. How many of those did they offer and not get? For the most part, OU gets the players they want in-state. There isn't enough home grown talent to field a competitive team, week in and week out, against top level competition. If there were, the athletic department wouldn't burn near as much jet fuel. And you can be sure that if we were passing on in-state guys that could contribute, Stoops would catch a lot of heat from the boosters, etc...

Well, why did the top player in the state go to play for texASS one year? Why do any go to Arkansas, Alabama, Baylor, Nebraska, etc...

Of the five state of Oklahoma commitments so far, four are 4-star, one (OL Creed Humphrey) is a 3-star.
While that's not a lot of quantity, it's certainly good quality and as far as I'm concerned, if OU can land a similar group of players every year from Oklahoma, that is good....especially if OU does well in Texas and by cherry picking. The 2017 class reflects tremendous success do this.

That's what "for the most part" means. Or didn't you read the whole post. Switzer had guys go out of state, too. Jeff Leiding to Texas. McFadden to USC. The quarterback from PC West to either USC, or UCLA. Quinn Grovey to Arkansas, James Trapp to Clemson, Will Shields to Nebraska etc.. All of those guys were the top players in their class, or very close to it. It happens. But for the most part, OU gets the guys they want in state.

Or maybe you are misunderstanding my post...

It has been repeatedly offered up that the state of high school football in Oklahoma has fallen off, and that is the "excuse" for poor performance or under performing...

I think that is a load of crap. The quality might vary from year to year, but as a whole, it is fairly consistent. The so called down years for the OU program also coincide with the "better years" for quality recruits from within the state. The fact is, when there was better talent in state, OU maintained it's regular average of in state recruits. 10 of the top 15 recruits in 2010 left the state. 9 of those went to Arkansas or Texas schools.

By way of contrast, OU got 11 of the top 50 recruits out of Texas in 2010, as compared to Baylor getting 2...

5 of the top 50 in 2009, Baylor got 1...

Where'd they go? Not to OU... Some do of course. It isn't the talent in the state, they just don't stay as often.

Here's the OP. Not sure how I missed your point with my original reply. I'll back out now, though, as I know this bait really wasn't meant for me. :)
