This week, we take a look at the Big XII Champ game. I am going to change up the format a little bit this week. Instead of breaking down each individual play, I am going to look at some groupings. This session is broken into two parts. First part is the run game, second part is the passing game. I really wanted to highlight what we did differently from this time compared to last time in the run game. If you remember the film study of the first baylor game, we highlighted the GT Counter and how Baylor attacked it to defeat it. They wrong armed the play, jumping under our pullers. This week the focus was on the split zone from Riley. But alas, let's get to the film! As always huge thanks to @Jeremy J for the cut ups.
Now, let's look at what became our bread and butter play of the game: the split zone.
Ok so LOTS to talk about here. First, This is six clips of the same play. If you do a rough tally of yards on those six plays, you get about 69 yards. That is an average of 11.5 ypc. Incredible. Secondly, this play was designed and implimented to absolutely beat up on Baylor's DE's. Half the time our blocker goes high, and the other half he chops. Body blow after body blow takes a toll on those guys as the game progresses. This play is also perfect to fit what our O linemen do well. All around great play design and execution. Which now leads to this
Here we run the PA of of the cross back look. The LB's jump inside and RS just runs right by them. The OL does a great job in pass pro. Jalen also does a great job of recognizing and delivering a quick pass. Again all around great play call and execution. I also love the way RS finishes runs.
OK let's move on to Part II: The Passing Game
Here we have pretty good protection, but Jalen does a nice job of staying in th pcket in the face of pressure and delivering a nice ball. The play design is awesome as well. You have CD at the top of the screen working a kind of Slant and go or an in and up. Then you have Brooks running a wheel route up the sideline. These routes pull the defense up the field, leaving a void. Willis works his was into that void and Jalen finds him. THe other great thing about this play is that Jalen has three options in the same line of sight. Jalen can look to his left and see how the defense covers. If the corner runs deep and that LB lets Brooks run by, Jalen can see that and hit Brooks. It really makes it easy for Jalen to go through progressions.
Notice the time left in the game on this play. Its the start of the fourth quarter. #93 does not look as dominate as he once did. TR is able to singl block him and I don't see that massive push that we saw in the beginning of the game. This goes to all those plays that he was getting beat up on and now he is running out of gas. We have decent blocking here, but these are the types of plays that Jalen will need to make to beat LSU and he has shown the ability to make them.
Again, the pass pro is really good. Those Baylor DL are just flat tired. Also Jalen uses nice footwork here, shows great patience and delivers a beautiful ball. I really wanted to talke some time to appreciate Jalen as a passer. Just an all around great play by all involved.
As beautiful as the previous play was, this play showcases Jalen's ability outside the pocket. He does a great Job of escaping to his right and that bad mamma jamma that was collapsing the pocket and keeping Jalen pinned in is just so done. Jalen does a good job here of attacking the LOS and having good body position when he delivers the ball. This is also on 1st and 20, down on our own end of the field with 3 minutes left in a tie ball game. This play here prevents Baylor from keeping us pinned down and potentially having the field position to attempt a last minute field goal. Just a great effort by the OL, Jalen and the WR on the play.
As was discussed ad nauesem, we dominated this game. But the turnovers made it closer than it should have been. We were able to establish the running game and Jalen was able to make plays down the field in the passing game. Riley attacking the DE's through the running game paid dividends as the game wore on. We were able to basically nuetralize Lynch by the start of the fourth quarter. Riley is the best OC out there and puts together a great game plan. The OL did a nice job staing after it all game. RS ran hard all afternoon. This team is built for winning in the playoff.
Thanks for reading and e will see you next week when we break down the LSU offense. See you then. Coach
