Notre Dame

Can't wait. We got two weeks to wrap recruiting and a lot of spots to fill.
I feel you Plaino, I really do. When this shit show started I felt Joe C had an inkling but it is clear that is not the case. I would rather take a little extra time to get the right coach. Frankly the roster is getting gutted. With the transfer portal today and NIL the players are not tied to a college. The coach, the right coach, will be and can offset the short term loss with long term results.

BTW, this season is exhibit A on why the early signing period should be in August and not in December. You wouldn't have this mad scramble of firing coaches mid-season and could actually respect the integrity of the game even while poaching your opponent's head coach.

Fickell is an Ohio guy. While nothing would shock me after this week, I personally think there are three jobs he would leave a pretty good gig. Those being in order, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Penn State.

You throw enough money at him and he may move. I don't think Oklahoma views him as a coach worth 7 million a year. Cincy is paying him 4 right now and their boosters have really started investing in the program after they got left out of a P5 league years ago. Oklahoma is a tier 1 job no doubt. I just think he really wants to stay where his family has always been. It's turning into a pretty good gig in itself and if Ryan Day ever does go to the NFL he is in a great position to get back to his dream job. The one held for one mediocre season in '11.

Oklahoma is the last chair open.

While Fickell is a definite possibility, he listed ND and tOSU as the only jobs he would leave for and currently neither one of them are open (of course we all know about coach speak and jobs). Let's also not forget that Cincy will be in the Big 12 in a couple of years so the P5 issue will no longer exist.

I find it hard to believe that Fickell would rather stay at Cindy than be the head coach at OU. There is no comparison. Offer him 8 mil/year and he couldn't get down here fast enough.

Agree, that's why I put in a couple of disclaimers lol

His wife comes from money - a great deal of money - so that is not a primary focus for them. They are very family focused and she has her entire family in the Cincinnati area. She says that is worth more than meandering from top job to another. He has said she is calling this shot and she is only every going to consider Ohio State. He may have his wish list but hers over rules his. Cincinnati does not pay them anything like they would get at Oklahoma right now, but with Cincinnati moving to the Big-12 the purse strings are going to open for his salary and his assistants. Cincinnati will go from making 7 million a year on their tv deal to 40 million.

Depends on what you value. Cincinnati has a chance to become one of the premier teams in the new Big 12 conference. He could stay and if he's successful, have a very comfortable and lower stress lifestyle living in his preferred region competing at the top of the Big12 (much like OU has enjoyed for the past couple decades). Or he could take the OU job, and while he'll make more money, he'd find himself somewhere between 3rd (at best) and 7th in the conference pecking order and having to recruit directly against the LSU's and Bama's in their backyards. OU could very easily become another Ole Miss, even with a good coach, and that would not lead to a long, stable career for Mr. Fickell.

The blue bloods will always be heavily from the SE.
The blue veins will fight over the scraps

Well if that is the case then I respect them for that. Lincoln probably would of went to texas for an extra 50k year

ND has hired Marcus Freeman as its next head coach. I think that’s a good choice. He’s a top defensive coach and had great success as a DC at both Cincinnati and ND.

It is really none of my business being a Mountaineer, but why does Oklahoma not look up the ladder? The SEC is basically set up to be the proving ground for NFL-oriented players, so why not go with an out of work NFL coach of some stature like: Doug Pederson?

Digging into the college coaching bin of Has-Beens and Never-Really-Were-All-That level of coaches seems like a waste of time, you will be doing this again in 4 years when the new guy turns out to be a bust. Outside of LSU and USC, no one has gotten a better coach than they fired. No one. At best, some made an exchange, but the coach that was fired is not different from the one they hired in enough ways to give any hope for the future. Even then, who here thinks Kelley will last his contract term? I don't. I give him 4 years and then fired. As for Riley, he has a screw loose, can't predict what he will do, but while many think he is the guy for the job, USC has a long road back and Riley gets bored if someone is not rubbing his butt and telling him he is pretty every night.

The 1 & only time that OU hired anything resembling a “stature” (if I may borrow your word for just a minute) coach & had anything resembling OU caliber success was Bennie Owen, & that was over 100 years ago. Other than that, all of our best ones (Wilkinson, Switzer, Stoops, & as much as I hate to include him right now, Riley) have been of the up & coming assistant variety. The 1 time in my lifetime (I’m 54) that they went with an established head coach (Schnellenberger) turned out to be a train wreck.

Yep, gotta sort out the baggage.
