No o-line, no Perine equals big trouble in Knoxville

I agree that the offensive line needs to grow up, but I'm not afraid. We saw nothing compared to the can that Stoops will open up on the Vols on both sides of the ball. We are loaded with talent. That was Akron. Welcome to the board Thebigo03.

Thanks for the welcome. I sure hope I'm wrong in the prediction but football is about being physical and our most physical player will have limited touches in this offense. Perine needs 25 carries in my opinion but like I said I really want to be wrong. Tennessee has a great atmosphere. I was lucky to attend a game there in the early 90's and it was awesome. I just hope if we get down early in the game Riley doesn't forget about the run.

That was the first game and Coach Stoops knew that Tennessee was coming up. We did not show last Saturday the same offense we will demonstrate against the Vols. Think back to when Tekas was good, and how many times we would not look so great on offense, until we unleashed the full spectrum of plays against the Horns. With Shepard and Westbrook to the outside, Mixon and Perine in the backfield, we will show a wide range of options we did not show against Akron.
Playing in Knoxville will not be easy, but we can win this. The one thing that worries me is turnovers, and we did a decent job against Akron. One fumble by a returner trying to break the big one and one pick by a now-backup QB known for throwing picks doesn't have me too concerned. I believe we win this game convincingly, unless we give the ball away several times!

A lot of these same points apply to Tennessee as well. Butch Jones knew very well that OU was coming up too. I will guarantee he has plenty left to show against OU on Saturday. And although I wouldn't trade the Perine/Mixon combo for anyone, Tennessee does have a pretty legit RB combo as well. Kamara and Hurd both ran for over 100yds on Saturday. So the threat they pose is pretty legit. Plus I would lean towards Tennessee having a bit better OL than OU does at this point. And Tenn's QB spread the ball around pretty well to several WRs. This is going to be a HUGE test for Mike and OUs defense this early in the season.
But no doubt this is a game OU can win. If they do win, I don't see them winning "convincingly". This is gonna be a tough fought game. Tennessee is a much improved team than what came into Norman last year.

We're not big enough to line up seven and stop their run game. We'll need help.

That's my only big fear of this game. If we can't stop their running attack, it's going to be a 38-35 type game.
Micco, we have a much better chance of stopping their running game than they do of stopping our passing game. We can mitigate their defensive strength (DL) by utilizing short routes and screen/draw plays. What can they do to mitigate our run D? All other things being equal, I see OU has having the matchup advantage. We have a far better chance of stopping their run game than they do of stopping our Air Raid.

I think this is one of the most intriguing Sooner games going in, in a long time. It is hard to imagine that Bowling Green is more likely to score more points against UTenn in Knoxville than OU might. We struggled on offense for a while, for various reasons. They were the kinds of reasons that can get magnified in a road game. But then, UTenn got lit up more than a little by a less than terrific lower level conference football team.

So their defensive weaknesses might match up with our offensive weaknesses.

On the other hand, their offense was pretty much great. And so was OUr defense. So that will be a wonderful match up too.

I think OUr special teams might be really special. I am very interested to see how this obviously special true freshman kicker handles 105K screaming obscenities at him when it really matters. This week, it really matters.

I got to watch the replay for the first time tonight. I'm more impressed with everything good in the game than I was on Saturday. I think the Sooners are a top ten team. Maybe better than that. Not a chance if they don't put up a win this weekend, but I think they have a great chance to.

Stuff happens on the road and it will be hard to hear. But I think this defense has first line guys at every position and quality depth everywhere. The OLine needs to grow a little, but I think they will. Sooners win 38-27.

Protect the damn ball.

I know it's apples and oranges, but I just re-watched the game from last year in Norman. Got to say, our defense was just mad dog nasty on the Vol. offense.
I don't know, but if their running game has improved that much from last year, then yes, we may have a long night.
One thing I do know.
Our D is just as strong as last year, IMO, so the Vol offense best bring their A game, or they'll have a long night.

Golly Moses I luv CFB.
(the only thing I luv that can't luv me back)

The Vols a year ago had a starting OLine that had four freshmen I think. At that time, those guys had a maximum of two games of experience. Now they have possibly 14. Night and day. And OU has three starting OLinemen of the five who have two games of starting experience, and two with very little playing time. We've swapped roles.

Last year, the Vols had an experienced immobile pocket quarterback, Justin Worley, behind those inexperienced guys. Now, they have a less experienced, but more athletic quarterback, Joshua Dobbs, who started the last half of last season after Worley got hurt, who is a run threat. We all know how teams with athletic run threat quarterbacks who throw it a little, have done against Mike Stoops' defenses. A lot.

This is not UTenn's team from last season. THey have been highly ranked in recruiting recently. They are better than last season by more than a little, and will be playing at home. I guarantee you, they will line up and run at Striker. He will need his big boy pads this week. It will be a close game decided by special teams.

OUr special teams this year have the capability of being elite. Across the board.

We really hope OU is a lot better than last season, and figure to be. The Vols figure to be, too.

I hardly ever post, being here in Afghanistan but I think this game is so nerve wracking by us fans is because way down deep inside each of us we believe we saw a little something last week that reminds us of 2000 and we are scared to death to fall for it this early in the season. When we do beat UT this week we are going to really start having those feelings again. Get by this week with a win and we could go undefeated up to the final 3 games, making them super games. I think we open it up and win convincingly.

OU 29 UT 28.............Last second field goal while Austin Seibert leads 100,000 fans in" block that kick". History repeats itself..........

2013 Hall of Fame inductee Rod Shoate (Oklahoma) had a career day during the 1974 Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas as the No. 2 Sooners faced No. 17 Texas. Shoate recorded 25 tackles, two pass break-ups and a fumble recovery. The game’s biggest play came courtesy of Hall of Famers Lee Roy Selmon (Oklahoma) and Earl Campbell (Texas). With the game all square at 13-13 in the fourth quarter and Texas facing fourth-and-1, Campbell attempted to rush for the first down but was crushed by Selmon, causing a fumble that was recovered by Shoate at midfield. On the ensuing drive, Oklahoma kicker Tony DiRienzo nailed a 37-yard field goal with 5:25 remaining, sealing the victory for the Sooners. Other Hall of Famers in the game included defensive tackle Doug English (Texas), running back Roosevelt Leaks (Texas) and running back Joe Washington (Oklahoma), and both coaches Barry Switzer (Oklahoma) and Darrell Royal (Mississippi State, Washington, Texas).

As you can see by my posts I think it will come down to a field goal. Here's a tribute to an old friend of this board. Read the article and the old friend was the field goal kicker......

OU by 3.....That's my prediction.

After watching the Vols vs. BGSU replay, their defense looks plenty big & fast for the starters but it quickly drops off for the backups. On the other hand, OU's two-deep in skilled positions is better than it has been in years.

Call it cliche', but conditioning will play a huge role in this game. Their 1s on our 1s is close. Our 2s on their 2s is a massacre for OU.
