Iowa State is really good. They play so hard. Defensively, they’re top-15 in the country. They try to speed you up. They’re going to deny, scramble, contest every single shot on defense. They make it so hard for you on defense to score. They try to speed you and rush you into turnovers and contested shots. We’re going to need great spacing and great ball movement. Offensively, they just cut really hard. Kalscheur is a key. They’ve beaten three teams that have won national championships in the last six years in North Carolina, Villanova and Baylor. In all those three games, Kalscheur has played really well. Older, physical guy. Grill plays really hard. Osunniyi is a fifth-year senior. I heard they have three guys over 24, and they play that kind of veteran style. They play really hard. They cut. I like their freshman point guard Lipsey, thought he was outstanding against Baylor. I thought he dictated a lot in that game. I see a team that picked up from last year, same tyle. Unbelievably hard-playing team at both ends.
How important is it to let the leaders lead after a loss?
Every game, leadership is huge with us. But you've got to know why. We really dug into the film. You've got to learn from it and then you've got to move on. You've got to turn the page. Obviously we're really disappointed. You play that thing to win it. Whether it's one point or 20 points. But one point, there's a possession here, a possession there or an offensive rebound there. We've got to find ways to win that game, and it starts with the leaders. I talked to our guys. It's insane. You saw that stat about the top 10 schedules are in the Big 12. With that said, you've got to be one at a time. You can't get too high and you can't get too low. You've got to put it in the bank, you've got to come back and you've got two or three days to prep for the next one. It's just like nothing in college basketball where all 10 teams have the 10 hardest schedules because all 10 teams are in the top 45. It's crazy. There's no time to hang your head. You can be pissed, which we are. Learn from it, know the why and apply it. Let's go get the next one. We've got to go get the next time.
What is the most impressive thing about Jacob Groves?
Consistency. Every single day at practice, he brings it. Every day he communicates. Every day, he's putting in his time with on his shot. He's an everyday guy. That's the difference between him and a lot of guys in this generation. It's every day. Some guys get all fired up and it's like a New Year's resolution. People like my age are in the gym for a little bit and then they taper off. Jacob has been every single day. Every day, he's on his prep. He's getting his shots up. He's on his nutrition. Success is paying off for him because he is every day. The word I think for Jacob is it's been consistent for him.
Tanner gotta be smarter?
Tanner's gotta be smart. We need him to play more in 17 minutes. He played 17 minutes last game. It seemed like he came in...you know they're gonna come right at him with foul trouble. You got to do your work early. Two of his fouls were doing his work late. He was behind the play and he jumped out at the last second and he got a foul. So he's got to do his work early so he can be in great legal defensive position. And he's been outstanding when he does that. So obviously, this league, we need great play from our bigs."
