Anybody watching this NHL Winter Classic?
I'm not a huge hockey fan, but this is a really fun watch on NBC. The Cotton Bowl is packed and rocking for this game. Seems like an awesome place to be on New Year's.

I agree. It was fun to watch another big event happen there. I think hockey teams are used to arenas with 20k-ish fans. Watching 85k people see and yell for a hockey game was really cool. Sounded like the RRS.

I was there and it was an absolutely insanely incredible experience I've had at a game in any sport. 85K Fans with 70K of them being Stars Fans going absolutely nuts. When Rads scored to go up 3-2, the Roof would have been blown off if there was one!

I saw the last 8 minutes and a whole lot of post game. Everybody seems to have love it. The Stars' journey will be interesting. Not sure they'll have the tactical ability to last in the playoffs. But they made a great NYD memory for themselves and the fan base.

The NBC people seemed pretty impressed too. It's refreshing to see a great game not tainted by ESPN nonsense.

I'm not a hockey fan, but I watched a few minutes. I like the NHL Winter Classics at the big stadiums and the turnouts have been fantastic. I would not be surprised if the NHL tries to capture some of this fan interest and plays more big stadium games, maybe even a playoff game or two.

Doubtful on the playoff idea, l would think. It's a pretty expensive proposition to pull off. And inconsistent spring weather would make things a bigger challenge.

NBC subsidizes the event to give them an alternative to college football and NBA hoops, which they have no rights to broadcast on New Years Day.

The NHL likes the special promotion of the league which accompanies. CFL stadiums don't have January games to be disrupted.

The NYD niche that they've carved out has nice value for all involved. One might imagine maybe as many as a half dozen regular season games. But diminishing the special circumstances of the niche would seem to have a negative impact after a year or two.

The Stars worked for more than a year to make it happen. And since it has to be played during the day, because of lighting inadequacies, more restrictions come into play.

Although everybody involved in Dallas loved the event, it's hard to imagine too much expansion of the idea.

80,000 people x $100 = $8M
That doesn't include the revenue The Fair made from opening the The Midway.
What do you think the incurred expense of the event was? $1M? $2M? I can't believe it to be much more.
But yes, you're right. Expanding the event would water them all down and certainly lower the profit.
