Owasso, OK
If you were given a golden ticket to present to Bob Stoops and it said, you have to change one specific (not general thing like "defense") thing be that a player position or specific position improvement, what would that be?

I don't have a brilliant insight here to add, I'm just curious.

Assuming you're doing a 4-3, three kick ass linebackers are hard to beat.

Those stellar Ds we had in the mid 80s were just smothering, nasty, junk yard dog snarly. Not to mention it's fun as hell to watch. (they did a five-two as I recall)

Waiting for some responses..........

Well for me, it's like asking the judges of the Miss America contest why the 3rd, 4th or 5th (us) place contestant could have done to be better? Bigger butts or did they miss a few notes when they sung? Sorry, I'm a pumper.....:)

I would ask Bob what's his golf handicap?..................

So you are saying a single linebacker that needs to be replaced? I understand the need for the corps, but what single thing?

OK, you're tying my hands on this...but yep, one bad ass linebacker like the Boz or George Cumby.

A guy like that is a game changer.

The Boz and Cumby played in a era where the running game was prevalent. Not so much in 2016 with the passing game and running Q-B's. I have no idea if they could be the same players today, but I doubt it.............JMO

Nothing against them, times change................

Perfect...that's what I was looking for. I was afraid to say essentially the same thing. I think the problem is that one difference maker, but it seemed disingenuous to say that considering what Striker did and had the potential to do from the outside linebacker/defensive end position.

Pass rusher like that full time, with an aggressive defense would make a hell of a difference.

Have 2 of those on the edge to mix it up and wow.

Think Teddy Lehman, Rocky Calmus, Torrance Marshall.
Having said that...you STILL need a stud or two on the DL and in the secondary AND a coach to lead them. Our current coach is the common thread, and while having another "coach on the field" like the 3 above would be awesome...we need more. Given how inept our offense was in the second half against Clemson, I'll be surprised if someone doesn't suggest we need help on the offensive staff.

I think the one thing I would change that may keep us from becoming the iowa of the "XII" would be the returning to the status quo for All long time, season ticket donors. What they are trying to pull is disgraceful, imho !

Well, you've got guy A running, guy B tackles him hard...makes him wish for his mama.

It's not complicated.:D

I know its breaking your rule but I'm stubborn so I'm sticking with my desperate wish to drop this hybrid 3-4 and get back to 4 down lineman and a nickel defense.

One of the best lessons my dad taught me at a really young age. Change your socks every day.

During the Battle of the Bulge, clean dry socks were at a premium. He had two pair of gov't issue wool socks that he would wash with melted snow. Lord, that had to have sucked. So everybody just change your damn socks, nobody should have to deal with trench foot these days...

If those socks were originally worn by Sockless you might be the only person to follow that advice.

I detect the point of the thread is to discuss players as opposed to coaches and as such, I've never been one to rag on the players so I'll go w/ Big Gamer Bob. There was a time when we saw a more Vegas style Bob by using his Special Teams. My golden ticket would tell him to undo his top button, let loose a bit more, and not be so conservative.

I'd change the ban on Little Red. I would love to see the University honor our state's great Native American heritage by bringing back this icon. Of course, Little Red would have to be a Native American student.
Good on You, Schoonerman, for putting into words the thought I was having on this subject. Thank You!

I miss that Iconic Mascot!

'THEY' are Spot On!

For those that never attended a game or may be too young to have had the FUN of witnessing a game when Little Red was the Sooner mascot, you don't know what you missed. It is a shame that Little Red isn't on the field with the Big Red anymore. My step-father is 92 and full blood Native American and is still pissed. So is his son.

Yep, I remember him in the 60s...on the sidelines in front of the team.
Doing his dances and gyrations. Truly inspiring to the team and the fan base.
Sadly, even the Indians of the state put in a bitch fest when he was cast aside in the name of politically correct bull shit.

I was young, and didn't realize the gravity of this bogus crap until later.:(

I've always maintained you Gotta have depth at the DL....Bama depth....to run the 4-3 successfully. Plus, against B12 offenses, it's not always the best formation. Reduces your ability to get creative with blitzes and unless you have LBs that can cover WRs the entire game...can be a liability against the spread.

Worth noting that Coach Mike has a history of making the most out of the players he's got, and that includes using defensive formations that best suit his skill sets and depth. He inherited a pretty weak set of LBs too.

So while I understand your wish, it means having 8-10 quality guys at the DL to be effective and can be a weakness against pass happy teams. My two cents.

AZ, I would never want to be able to dictate any specific thing, because I trust Bob's leadership and that he knows a heckuva lot more about the details. I'd like to see three or for more than general things.

I heard hints that last preseason, that Bob backed way off on the contact. And I believe that's true and I believe it helped. And I got the feeling, against from the bits and pieces you hear, that there was some pretty significant contact in practice pretty close to bowl gametime, because he felt that without games for five weeks, that they needed a little. I know that it's part of the mindset of the former safety who played his senior year with a torn knee ligament, and whose assistant coach/position coach at Iowa told HC Hayden Fry when Bob was a freshman trying to earn a position that he wasn't great in coverage that he really liked Bob, because he chase you into the stands to hit you. Bob wants players with toughness attitudes and he prefers to not wait til game days to find out who might and who might not. But I think that these days, you're better off with a scaled back significantly amount of contact after spring practice. I believe that OUr players hit each other enough in the bowl prep that they were a little slower because of it.

I'd like to see Bob tell his OC that we want a little more Wildcat formation, or whatever you wish to call it. I think that Baker has had two concussions in the last three months and he needs to run less, even if it makes OUr offense better. You can't play quarterback worrying about it. But as a coach, you can cut down on his vulnerability.

And I believe that it would be a good idea to play Cody or whoever the back up quarterback turns out to be, one series in the first half for three games, just to get him some reps with the ones.

And I'd like to see Drake and Isaac graduated at midterm their senior years.

Maybe scrutinizing more closely a recruit's character, family influence and academic status as much as his on-field accomplishments. It's wishful thinking to believe a program can bring in 25 "boy scouts" each February, but there seems to be too many character issues throughout CFB these days.

Agree, CT, except that it goes back much further than 'these days'. There have always been a bad apple or 3 in every bushel, but the lack of major media exposure kept many of their 'escapades' secret. Moving forward, the Bad Boy behavior during Barry's reign was highlighted by CT, in prisoner orange, on the cover of SI and Nigel Clay being led from Wilkinson House in 'cuffs was shown on every TV set in the country. No longer able to sweep it all under the rug, or keep it behind closed doors, the out-of-control disciplinary problems made headlines and they brought down The King...

Fortunately, there are many more 'boy scouts'...the Sams...the Landrys...the Sterlings, but the media, being the media, rarely cover quality of character as much as they sensationalize the
character defects of the few...Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Sad, but true...

I'd like for the coaching staff to stress the proper way to tackle and quit permitting the players from just running into people in order to make a big hit and knock them down. Across the country, college players are much poorer tacklers than players 25 years ago were. The best tacklers seem to be DTs and DEs. They have to be. But too often LBs and DBs miss tackles because they use their shoulders instead of wrapping up the way they should. I'd rather have a good solid tackle that maybe isn't so teeth rattling than to have a missed tackle trying to knock the crap out of the guy.
