The Sooners will have 6 talented RB's in the house for 2015. I'd call that a logjam. Perine, Ford, Ross and Brooks have all played and played well, if in Brooks case sparingly. And don't go to sleep on Brooks the kid is fast and if he has good hands Riley's offense will put him in a position to showcase his talent. Perine, Ross and Ford are all big, strong fast backs that have the ability to catch and run. If Riley wants to feature his backs catching the ball out of the backfield these guys can do.
Now add in Mixon, another big, strong fast back that can catch the ball and run over or away from people. This young man is going to be a BEAST. Oh yeah, Anderson is coming in also, and he too is a big, strong, fast running back.
Personally I can't remember ever seeing a collection of running backs like this on one team, anytime, anywhere. I see a lot of 2 back sets in our future, but no matter how you slice it there won't be enough carries to go around. That means there will be many swing passes, screens, out and ups and up and outs to feed the many headed monster that will be the Sooners "run game".
A total of 85 offensive plays with 35 rushes and 50 passes is about what I expect from Riley. Even with 10 "long hand offs" to the RB's, 45 touches split up among 6 backs is real thin. Somebody is gonna go hungry. If Anderson, who is an I formation tailback, takes a RS to work on learning this new style offense that leaves 5 backs with Brooks, Ford and Ross all with 2 seasons left. Ross has a job returning kicks so he'll stay, Brooks is really well suited for this style of offense so he will probably stay. Ford could start for many if not most D1 teams so I think he will leave if he can't get into the rotation. But I don't think that's how it will go.
Instead I got Perine and Mixon as starters with Ford and Brooks backing them up and playing a lot. They will go full out on every pass play and wear the defenders out trying to cover them. Riley will get Ross in enough to keep him happy along with kick returns, and Mike's terrible defense will make sure he gets lots of opportunities to return kickoffs.
How do you see it playing out?
